MORNINGTON SOLDIERS’ MEMORIAL.
A SUCCESSFUL CONCERT. An entertainment was held in Burns Hall on Saturday night in aid of the funds of ■ the Mornington Soldiers’ Memorial, and, in j spite of the wintry weather conditions, I there was a very fair attendance. After ! the singing of a verse of the National An- j them. Mr J. W. Patton (chairman of the I Memorial Committee) thanked those who j were present for braving the elements, and j assured them that they would be well re- ! warded for doing so—a promise that was j amply redeemed. The concert was held ! in the city because there is no suitable hall j available in Mornington, and also because ' it was thought advisable to pive city resi- i dents an opportunity of contributing to the ! memorial funds and at the same time listening to a programme of much more than average merit. The committee, who ; worked to secure the erection of the me- i morial also has been faced with an unex- , pected expenditure, in that it was antioi- j pa ted that space would have to be found ; for about 40 names, whereas the actual 1 number engraved was 82. Saturday night’s programme included the names of several j amateurs whose efforts are always welcomed, and at least one debutante in the I city—Miss Rita Lamb. This _ young lady i at once established a reputation as a re- I citer, and her future appearances will bo watched with interest. Notwithstanding the adverse weather, there was not an ab- I sentee among those who had promised to | take part, and this is a decidedly unusual experience for promoters of entertainments, i The programme given was as follows: | Song. “Tlie Reason,” Mr S. Jeffs; reci- j tation. Miss Doreen Todd; song, “Happy i Song.” Miss A. Guy; violin solo. “Adagio | Finale” (De Beriot’s “Ninth Concerto”), Mr J. A. Wallace; song, “Friend o’ Mine,” j Mr W. Strang; dance (Sailor’s Hornpipe), 1 Master Hugh M’Arthur; song, “The Skip- I per,” Mr R. W T alls; humorous sketch, Mr' J. Deaker; song, “She is Far from the , Land,” Mr J. Haig ; recitation, “The Rc- j »erie in Church,” Mias R. Lamb; song, Mr ; G. Henderson t song. “The Wren.” Miss ' Betty Baird; flute solo, “Andante Maz- i urka,”_ Mr W. F. Morrison: song, “Don’t j Be Quite Forgetting," Miss K. MacCallum; dance (double Irish jig). Masters H. and I. M'Arthur; recitation. “The Bobolink,” Miss N. Osborn; song, “Peg Away,” Mr A. G. Cooke. Every item was deservedly encored, but, as there were no delays, the entertainment was over at _ a reasonable hour. Mr Charles A. Martin assisted the singers with his sympathetic accompaniments. and Mr R. Clark furnished the pipe muse iof the dances
