LIFE-SAVING CONTEST.

SPORTING PRINCIPLE INFRINGED. CLUB MEMBERS CENSURED. (Pm United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 25. The action of three rnemitera of tho Now Brighton Surf Club in refusing to compete as members of the Canterbury representative team for the Nelson Shield life-saving contest at lha New Zealand championship meeting at. Wellington last month provoked a lively discussion at the meeting of the Canterbury Surf Association. The members concerned had been selected for tho Canterbury team, but instead represented their club at the contest, and New Brighton won tho shield. Tho three members, in tho correspondence read, gave reasons for their action. During the course of a long discussion it was recognised that a principle was at stake, in (hat in sport it was recognised that, when a person was selected to represent his province he must do so unless ho had sound reason for refusing. It was resolved that tho association did not consider the explanations offered bv tho three members satisfactory to H\o association from a surfing standpoint, and that they te censured for their action. An amendment that, the members be suspended from the date of the offence was defeated, as was an amendment that the association view with displeasure the action of tho three members, and expressed regret for the lateness of the selection of tho Canterbury team. Before the motion was put Hie Now Brighton Club delegates withdrew from tho meeting.
