REFEREES’ ASSOCIATION.

ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report of the Otago Referees’ Association, to be presented at the forthcoming annual meeting, ' contains tile following clauses: — Your executive feels justified in writing down the season as a success from every point of view. Exclusive of school matches, which wore mostly controlled by the teachers of the various schools, we were required to supply referees for an average of 30 matches every Saturday —approximately 500 for the season. To find the defaults practically nil in so heavy a season is a matter for congratulation, and speaks well for the keenness of our 51 members. Generally speaking, the standard of refereeing was high and some of the junior members showed great promise. Several meetings for the discussion of rule., were held during the year, and were undoubtedly productive of good. During thh season the members of tire Appointment Board were required to meet on 18 occasions, and the association is under a debt of gratitude to these gentlemen for the services they rendered eo willingly and well. Your executive desire* to express its keen appreciation of the handsome treatment, financially and otherwise, extended to the association by the O.R.F.L. Thanks are also due to the press, to Mr E. S. Wilson (for the use of committee room), and to those who acted as line umpires in the various matches. In conclusion, the executive congratulates the playing members of the various clubs on the fine spirit in which the games were contested, and hopes that the same spirit will again be shown during the incoming season. The executive also wishes to eay that it feels it has a claim on the services of a proportion at least of those players who have decided to retire from the playing field.
