It is stated that tho men were informed when engaged that their wages would be 14s a day, but the department has since odvised that 12s a day would be paid. The Mayor (Mr Donaldson) wired, protesting to the Minister, who replied that he had never indicated that 14s a day would be paid; and only consented tc provide relief work at the current rates of relief pay, which are 10s for single and 12s for married men. The Taranaki Daily News reports that a serious assault on a man named George Speck was committed at Midhirst one night recently. The police state that Speck, who is a middle-aged man, was attacked by a man with a piece of wood, and had his head and face severely battered, and was then stabbed with a pitchfork. • Subsequently a man named Edward O’Connor who lives at the foot of the mountain, was arrested on a charge of assaulting Speck. O’Connor was brought before the Magistrate’s Court, at Stratford, and was remanded till March 22, bail being allowed in self of £2OO. or two sureties or £IOO each, or one of £4OO. Speck’s condition is not at present considered dangerous.
