RECIPROCAL TRADE WITH AUSTRALIA

HON. W. DOWNTE STEWART’S MISSION. (From Our Own Coerkspondent.) WELLINGTON, March 24. A private cablegram received here to-day states that great interest is being taken in Air Downio Stewart’s mission both in commercial and political circles. The Melbourne Herald, on the question of who holds the whip hand, says: “Mr Stewart has made no secret of the fact that the desire of the dominion is to bargain, and this is distinctly unpalatable to the commonwealth, which wants preference to be general on both sides. New Zealand is too good a customer for the commonwealth to lose, as would be the case if negotiations broke down. It will be interesting to see whether the commonwealth attitude will be modified if tho dominion remains firm in her present demands.’’
