WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council was held yesterday. Accounts amounting to £252 16s lid were passed for payment. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The Inspector reported as follows: Riding. Stony Peak road has been graded throughout and work is proceeding on Sandy’s track. The steep pinch has been improved in grade, and a pipe culvert laid across the road. Water-tables have been cleaned oht on the Main road near Flag Swamp, and the road blinded where necessary. A 9in pipe has been inserted on the River road in place of an old cdlvert. Gravel is being carted for M'Callum's road and water-tables ploughed. Merton Riding.—The Main road has been blinded with clay and rotten rock where necessary, and loose metal raked into holes. Allan’s road has been surfaced. Tho men have been engaged for the last fortnight in surfacing Biucher road and cutting off tussocks. Another week or two will make a good job of the road from the Woolshed to Malloch’s. The metal for Porteoua’s road is broken, and will be carted on to the road next month. The road from Seacliff to Puketeraki is getting out of repair, and requires about 30 .yards of metal opposite the Mental Hospital Reserve and the water-table cleaned out. About the same quantity pf metal is wanted for the other, end of the road above the railway station. Blueskin Riding.-—The worst of the damaged walls on the Lower Harbour have been repaired, a quantity of stone having been quarried and carted to repair the wall near Bonner’s. Metal has been raked in on the Main road, potholes filled, and the road blinded. The work of straightening the curves on the Main road has been left in the meantime, but will probably be finished next week. Repairs have been done on Waitati-Port Chalmers road, and on Donald’s Hill. North-East Valley Riding.—Very little work has been done in this riding during the month, as the surfaceman was engaged on work at Lower Harbour, but a start is being made again in filling potholes on the Main road. Two days’ carting of ashes is required for the footpaths at Sawyer’s Bay. The reports were received and approved. It was resolved that the inspector interview the Mental Hospital authorities and arrange with them to repair and metatf the road near the Seacliff railway station. Cr M‘Lachlan moved that the Harbour Board bo approached and asked to deliver two punt loads of stone, free of cost, on the Lower Harbour road for use in the upkeep of the wall. On the motion of Cr Overton it was resolved that the inspector arrange for a truck load of Shag River gravel to be delivered at the Tumai railway station, to be spread on the Main road between Tumai and Goodwood, filling up potholes, eta The Chairman brought up the question of the council’s obligation in regard to the Cemetery road, Waikouititi, and it was decided to spend the gum of £3O upon it. CORRESPONDENCE. H. C. Campbell wrote enclosing cheque for £7, amount asked for in connection with the improvement to the road leading from tho Main road to Mrs R. Driver’s place. He expressed the hope that the work would be put in hand as sodh us possible.—Received with thanks. Messrs Payne Bros., Flag Swamp, wrote asking that repairs be effected to the road leading to the run within three weeks if possible.—The Chairman (Ci M'Gill) said that some portions of the road did need attention. —It was decided that the work be gone on with as soon as possible. Mr W. Taine asked for a road at Karitane to be made passable, as he intended to build.—lnspector to report. Mr A. M‘Lachlan wrote complaining of old timber riddled with borer being used in a seaside building, and stating that he considered the council should take action to prevent such material being used. It should be ordered to be burnt.—Left in the hands of the inspector to deal with. Mr J. C. Connolly complained of the road in front of his property at Leith Valley being damaged by cattle. He asked that fences across the road be removed. The channels and culverts were in bad order.— The Inspector reported that no permission existed for a fence or gate to be across the road, and it was decided that thq inspector confer with Mr ConnolK- on the matter. The Commissioner of Taxes forwarded notices calling the attention of taxpayers to their statutory obligation to furnish returns of land and returns of income.—Received.
