An important work to be undertaken by the Wellington Harbour Board, according to the engineer's annual report, is the extension of the Miramar wharf by 200 ft and the strengthening of the structure. The extension is designed to provide for the larger class of vessels requiring oil fuel from the Vacuum Company’s storage tanks at Miramar. The proposed strengthening of the old wharf will enable coal-handling cranes to be installed for discharging coal. The work will be 63ft 4in over the fender*, and, owing to the considerable depth of the water and the very soft nature of the bottom, it is proposed to dump dredgings on the site of the extension to a depth of 35ft below water at the centre of the wharf, through which the piles will be driven. Turner, one of the party, was successful in finding part of a Maori axe, marie of stone, and numerous obsidian tools. He also found the remains of a skeleton of a moa, which was discovered lying beside a heap of small stones such as are understood to nave been carried in the gizard of these birds. The bones were very battered and chalky showing that they had been exposed for a long period. Some of the pieces of shin bone were about a foot long, and on being shown to Captain Gilbert Mair, were identified by hiip as moa bones The stones were equivalent to a double handful, and were worn and rounded. Recently it was reported that, quinnat salmon had been caught in the lower Wairarapa Lake, but doubts were expressed (says the Wairarapa Daily News) as to whether they were the genuine quinnat. The matter has now been definitely decided. Lately Mr K. Gold, of Lake Ferry, landed several small ones, and sent the largest, weighing some seven or eig.it popnds, to Mr L. F. Ayson, chief inspector of Government dea Fisheries, who has replied stating that undoubtedly the quinnat salmon has made its way into the lake. He states that recently a number c f quinnat was liberated at Cloudy Bay. in the South Island. A current sets in from Cloudy Bay and enters directly Palliser Bay, into which Lake Onoke opens. The salmon had evidently gone with the current and have now located themselves definitely in the lake. At present they are only young fish, but before long big ones can confidently be expected.
