PREFERENCE TO BRITISH TENDERERS.

Abemethy, does pot to my mind arrive at the vital point in the matter of the use of electrical pood a from foreign countries and, as he has made a comparison, America versus Great Britain, I trust that you -will allow me a further explanation on the matter. If you take the contractors throughout New Zealand, you will find them to-day giving preference to American electrical good®, especially electrical machinery. We need not go far to seek the reasonBoiled down to one word it means “efficienev.” As no doubt this will be queried, I shall endeavour to prove this assertion. Take a tour through any electrical station in New Zealand, and what do you find? American or other foreign machines. Go into the private factories and the same thing applies there. You are told that there is no bother with these machines, and they are olways right off the mark. Take Waioori. These machines have been called upon at peak loads to give out power very much in excess of their rating, and hav? stood up to all iests. In the near future they will bo replaced, and it behoves our councillors to see that efficient machines take their ple-e, and then they will be as free from, electrical stoppage as in the past. The council, in many cases, sends its orders Homo through its buyers, the goods are handed over, and the ratepayers have to foot the bill. We have many contractors who aro thorough engineers and have the right goods. They are prepared to guarantee and, further, take .all responsibility of the machines they handle. The contractors arc called upon to go to the trouble and; expense of tendering on the article that has proved efficient and then find that no outsiders are to be given a hearing. On many lines wo have no option but to go to America, as we find that the British makes rules, but will not supply the goods to comply with them.—l am. etc., F. J. O’Neill. Dunedin, Match 22.
