HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS

FOOTBALL CLUB-ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the High School Old Boys’ Football Club was held last night at tho Waratah Tea Rooms, Mr Herbert Webb (president) in. tho chair. There was a good attendance. A hearty welcome wae extended to Mr W. Strong and Mr Webster (president of the Old Boys’ Association). Mr W. MTunes moved the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, which was seconded by Mr A. J. Hey, who remarked that ir was rather hard luck that the Old Boys’ Club oould not put more than two teams into the field. Otherwise, the report was very satisfactory indeed. The financial position, with a credit balance of over £25, was the best in which the club had found itself. The success of tee senior team in winning the Senior Grade cup waa very gratifying, and it was largely due to the true sporting spirit that animated the players. After all, the great thing was to play the game, whether successful or not. It was a great thing to be able to take a licking as well as to take victory in a proper spirit.—(Applause.) Mr E. J. Smith said the report was one of- the finest he had ever heard read, not only because it recorded success, but because of te© manner in which it was put together. They had started with a credit of £4, and finished with over £25. After all, the game was the thing, whether it was soccer or Rugby. He was very pleased that the club had succeeded in getting to the top of the tree, and hoped it would keep there. Judging by the state of the finances and the enthusiasm of members, there was good reason for believing that it would.—(Applause.) The Secretary (Mr L. S. Abernethy) said he hoped the forthcoming visit of the New South Wales team would give the same impetus to soccer that the visit of the Springboks had given to Rugby, and he believed it would. Mr E. J. Anderson said he thought the club had every reason to be proud of itself. He congratulated it upon tho fact that it was the first club to send £5 to the association towards the guarantee for tee visit of the New South Wales team.—(Applause.) He congratulated the team on the position it had won, and hoped it would be quite as successful this year.—(Applause.) The motion was carried. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows;—President, Mr H. Webb (re-elected); vice-presidents—Messrs W. Strong, W. J. Morrell, E. J. Anderson, E. J. Smith, J. A. Hey, A. E. Fastier, B. The opening day of the season was fixed for Saturday, April 1. Mr Webster (president of the Old Boys’ Association) urged all members to join the association, and expressed his willingness .o enrol hew members. Mr Strong congratulated the president on his election for the fourteenth year in succession. He thanked members for hie election as a vice-president, which he esteemed an honour. The dear old school had given them their education, and he was sure that tho same spirit that animated the boys in tee old days was still to be found governing tho school, and that the boys were taught to play the game on the field and off it. He was engaged in an effort to amalgamate all the old boys’ associations in the dominion, ani ho was hopeful of success, for it would have a good influence on members. He wanted to see clean sport, and he was sure that whexeever the old boys played that would bo shown. —(Applause.) Messrs Spedding and Scott (representing the 0.F.A.) were warmly welcomed. Mr D. M. Spedding congratulated the club on its excellent record, and on having sent as one of its delegates to the O.F.A. Mr E. J. Anderson, who as president was the right man in the right place. Ho hoped to see the Old Boys’ Club this year in the same proud position that it occupied last year.— (Applauso.) He congratulated the captain on his play and leadership, and the club on having been the first to come forward with its guarantee for the New South Wales team. Mr L. H. Scott also returned thanks for his welcome, and remarked that he knew a few clubs who would envy the Old Boys on their sound financial position. He congratulated tho senior team on its victory, which waa all the more creditable because it had been won by clean football. At the close of the meeting members were entertained at supper.
