OIL TANKS AT WELLINGTON

FOUR MILLION GALLON CAPACITY. (Fsom Ouh Own Cohrespondent.) . WELLINGTON, March 22. Out at Miramar, on the shores of ope of tho bays of Wellington Harbour, the Vacuum Oil Company lias established, after over a year’s work, a station for crude oil, tho tanks having a capacity of over 4,000,000 gallons. Tho main inlet and discharge pipes are 12 inches in diameter, and in the engine room are pumps capable of handling 1500 gallons of oil per minute. The tanks, which are huge affairs, were imported in sections from America, and when cornnlcted were tested with sea water, and no Teaks were found, a compliment to the manufacturers and the work of the riveters. A method of prevention of destruction, by fire has been installed. This is an arrangement, by means of which chemical bubbles form masses of foam and put out the fire. Two chemicals are used to make tho foam, and once this is thick upon the surface of the oil. no air can got at it, and so fire cannot The whole arrangements in connection with this oil store are most complete, and before long “tankers” will be able to load up at it. A similar store is being erected by the company at Sydney.
