PUBLIC MONUMENTS.

TO THE EDITOR. g ir>i It is to be hoped that the sensible letter’ in this morning’s Daily Times with reference to the removal of the Cargill Monument will receive the due consideration o£ the City Council, and that a deputation of citizens to the council will further this. The suggestion made by “Mo Fossil” that the site now occupied by the monument is eminently suitable for a tram shelter, is a sound one. It would certainly be a better position for the much-required shelter than the centre of the loop would be, for a shelter shed there would not provide accommodation for passengers by the through trams to and from the north end via George street. In a previous letter I suggested that the statue of Dr Stuart might be placed outside Knox Church or, failing this, outside the entrance to Knox College. But this would perhaps be too far out of town for a public monument, ond I agree with “No Fossil” that either the grounds of First Church or Anzac square would be a fitting position for the statue. 1 think the City Council should take some steps to find out what is the general opinion of our citizens in this matter, before it takes final action, and as, I understand, the question is la have the attention of the council at its next meeting, I think the Mayor should previously call a general meeting of citizens to get their views on the subject.—l am, etc., F, O. B. Dunedin, March 21.
