NEW ZEALAND TEACHERS ABROAD

REUNION AT WINNIPEG, CANADA. Three of the New Zealand teachers who recently went across to Canada under a reciprocal arrangement between the New Zealand and Canadian educational authorities, have settled in Winnipeg. They appear to be enjoying their new experiences thoroughly and to be receiving much kindly hospitality from the people of Winiipeg. Tho Winnipeg Evening Tribune of January 14 gives a lengthy account of a reception that was accorded them by the Overseas Educational League. “To meet as strangers,” it says, “in a mountain inn on Franz Joseph, the Matterhorn of the New Zealand Alps, where they were marooned by the bursting of a’ glacier meet for tho second time in Winnipeg, as exchange teachers of the Overseas Educational League, this is the experience of three of the New Zealand teachers now in this city. Two of them. Miss Winifred Valentine and Miss Isabel Morrison, renewed thoir glacier acquaintance on the s.b. Niagara on which they crossed to Vancouver. The third is Miss L. Hargreaves, who has been teaching in the Winnipeg school staff since Septemiier. These three, with Miss Edith Hind, who also has been here since September, and Miss R. B. M‘Queen, of Dunedin, New Zealand, held a jolly reunion after their arrival, and with Miss B. E. M. Lucas of London and Miss M. van De Merwe, South Africa, were guests of honour of Major Ney, of the Overseas Educational League, at noon to-day at the Fort Garry Hotel Other guests vifere Lady Aikins. Me? S. P. Matheson, wife of the Archbishop of Rupert’s Land, president of the league: Hon. B. S. Thornton, Minister of Education; Robert Fletcher, deputy-Minister cf Education; President J. A. MacLenn, of the University of Manitoba; Dr Daniel MTntyre, superintendent of education ; Arthur Congdon, chairman of the Winnipeg School Board; Dr E. Leslie Pidgeon. C. N. M'Cann, and Miss Fox. president, of the Winnipeg Teftchers’ Club.” The Tribune goes on to give nn account of the New Zealand school system as described by these teachers, and adds. “The New Zealand teachers brought good reports of tho work of Canadian teachers who are taking schools in thoir country. A special request was sent in by a school board for a Canadian teacher, and it is believed u Saskatoon girl, now there, wilt take it. Miss Norma M’Gougan, for 11 years a member :>f the Albert.' School staff, and Mrs G. Silcock, of the Ea Mcrondrye School, who will take the positions of Misses Morrison and Valentine, sailed from Vancouver to-day. Accompanying them back to Now Zealand wore Misses Elizabeth Bevan, MillEe.it Black more, and Lou Mulcock, New Ze:i«md teachers who have had nine months in Canada and Europe, observing in the schools.”
