Mr T. H. Lowry, of Hawke’s Bay, has left on his return to England. Mr C. F. Alexander, of Auckland, formerly tramways manager at Dunedin, is at present on a visit here. Miss Rawson, professor of home science, Otago University, has returned to Dunedin from a holiday tour. A t a special ■ meeting of the executive of the St. John Ambulance Association, held last evening, Mr J. J. Clark was unanimously appointed president. The Hon. Ti. Scott, M.L.C., left for Wellington by the second express yesterday. Captain Colin M’Donald and Mr R. Y. Constable, of the Union Steam Ship Company, travelled north by the second express yesterday. The Otago Board of Education has appointed Miss Winifred Snell as assistant at the Mosgiel District High School. Mr Justice Sim left by the second express for Oamaru yesterday, where he will preside at the Supreme Court sittings. Next week he will take the sittings at Timaru. Mr Leslie H. Goddard returned yesterday from Invercargill, where he gave an organ recital on Monday evening at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church. The Southland Times speaks in very high terms of Mr Goddard s performance. Mr S. E. M’Oarthy, S.M , who has reached the age of retirement, was ten dcred a farewell at Christchurch yesterday morning by the members of the legal profeseion and pressmen (says a Press Association telegram). The death occurred at Wanganui on Monday of Mr F. C. Millward, secretary of the Wanganui Harbour Board, a post which he held with every credit for a number of years, until failing health caused him to relinquish it, although he continued for some time to assist the board in an advisory capacity. Our Kaitangata correspondent says that Mr William Carson, manager of the Kaitangata and Castle Hill Collieries, left on Monday for Wellington. Corliss, Commissioner of Stamps, has undergone a serious operation in a Wellington private hospital (telegraphs our Wellington correspondent). It was stated at the meeting of the New Zealand Institute (says a Wellington Press Association telegram) that Professor C. Coleridge Farr (Canterbury) has been awarded the Hector Prize and Medal for 1922 for researches in physical science, more particularly work in connection with magnetic survey in Now Zealand. The following have been elected Fellows of the New Zealand Institute (says a Wellington Press Association message):—Pro lessors Somerville and Maraden (Victoria College) and Messrs 11. M. Laing (Christchurch) and Percy Ninger (Wellington). The friends of Mr and Mrs Alex. Brock recently assembled at Glencairn, Merino Downs, to hid farewell to Mr and Mrs and the Misses Brock, who are leaving the district to live in Gore. Mrs Brock was presented with a SO-pieoe Royal Doulton dinner set, Mr Brock a case of Locwe pipes, Miss Brock a gold chain and pendant set with divines and pearls, and Miss Mary Brock a gold brooch set with aquamarines. On behalf of the Merino Downs telephone subscribers Miss Brock was presented with a gold wristlet watch, A pleasant gathering took place at the South Dunedin Police Station yesterday afternoon, when all the constables in the South Dunedin sub-district met to eay goodbye to Sergeant Scandrett on the eve of his departure for Invercargill on promotion as senior sergeant. A presentation of a gold-mounted fountain pen was made to Mrs Scandrett, Constable Pratt, the senior constable present, making the presentation Eulogistic reference was made to Senior Sergeant Scandrett’s abilities as a police officer, and to Mrs Scandrett, who was a worthy helpmeet of her husband.
