FIRES.
OUTBREAK AT ELTHAM. HEAVY DAMAGE DONE. (Peb United Peess Association.) ELTHAM, January 31. A disastrous fire occurred in the early hours of the morning, completely gutting two of the largest shops in the centre of tlie business portion of Eltham The fire started in B. O. Goldstone’s drapery store and spread to C. A. Wilkinson’s hardware store adjoining. A northerly gale rendered the brigade’s efforts unavailing. All the premises were owned by Wilkinson, and insured in the Phoenix for £4OO. Wilkinson’s stock was insured for £BOO with the Phoenix; Goldstone’s with the Phoenix for £6OO, Atlas £2OOO. Eoval £IOOO, Standard £IOOO. Alliance £9OO, South British £7OOO, Queensland £4OO. The loss is estimated at over £20,000. NINE-ROOM BUILDING DESTROYED. DANNEVTRKE, January 31. Mr Harold Johnson’s homestead at Waitahora, a nine-roomed wooden structure, was oompletely destroyed by fire. Mr and Mrs Johnson were absent on holiday at the time. The Ivouse was valued at £2500 and the contents at between £I2OO and £I3OO. The house was insured m the National Office for £I3OO and the furniture and contents for £750 with the same office.
