OTAGO ANNUAL REGATTA

The regatta to be held at Port Chalmers on Tuesday next, February 7, promises to provide one of the best of the “Carnival Week” attractions. The Port Committee is laying itself out to make this a great gala day, and the regatta this year promises to provide one of the best aquatic displays yet seen in the Otago Harbour. The committee offers £250 in the way of prizes, and this has been the 'means of attracting excellent entries. There are 11 (eleven) rowing events on the programme and the lowest number of entries lor any race is five crews, while there are as many as 11 in some races, and it will be seen that there will be excellent competition for the rowing events. The sailing, motoring, and s.wimmiug events have all attracted excellent entries. No doubt the chief feature of the regatta will prove to be the test amongst the 14-footers. The first of these races will take place at 10 a.m., and the raoe at 2 p.m. is for the championship of Otago, this race carrying prizes valued at £3O, £lO. and £6, and the winner will also receive a beautiful cup, donated by Mr J. R. Cameron, and also the championship of Otago. It is expected that all, 14-footers in the harbour will compete in this race, in which case there will be 14 boats competing, and this alone should provide a very fine spectacle, and provide a keenly contested race.

The swimming races will be held in the steamers’ basin, commencing at s'p.m., and as excellent entries have been received, the swimmers will cause a good deal of interest and plenty of amusement in such itfma as the .greasy pole event, etc. The committee has also arranged for dinghy races for boys in the steamers’ basin, for which post entries will be received.

The Railway Department ia making special train arrangements for conveying the public to and from Port Chalmers, and the public can rely on an excellent day’s outing.
