CUSTOMS DUTIES. The local Customs duties for the month of January total £42,563 18s Id; beer duty, £18,617 10s 6d. There wore no exports of gold or silver. For the month of January, 1921, the Customs duties amounted to £83,621 10s 9d; beer duty, £10,786 5s lOd. There were no exports of gold or silver. CHEISTCHURJH, January 31. Tho liveliness in the oat market last week has not been maintained, and is apparent that the source of tho demand was restricted. It is stated that the order was a transhipment one for tho East. At all events, whilst 3s Id, f.0.b., s.i., wae temporarily operating to meet the inquiries, business has not been done since at 3s. Tho price to farmers for A grade Gartons may bo quoted at 2s 2d to 2s Id, country stations. Wheat is commencing to come in from North Canterbury, and is going into millers’ hands. This wheat did not get the advantage of the good rains early in January, and is shrivelled to some extent. There is some inquiry for perennial ryegrass, and up to 2s 7<i has been offered for first-class farmers’ undressed. Average quotations are: 2s 2d to 2a. Ed for ordinary to good. There is little offering. Contradictory reports continue to come to hand regarding the potato blight in the Willowbndge and Waimate districts. One of the growers staters that his crop in the Waimate district is seriously affected, and others with small areas in various parts of contiguous districts report clean crops. The weather of the past few days has been more conducive to blight. LONDON BUTTER MARKET. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 81. Messrs A. H. Turnbull and Co. have received the following cablegram from Weddell and Co., London:—“The butter market is now practically clear oL old stocks. A small experimental shipment from New South Wales of frozen pigeons was very satisfactory. Tho bulk fetched la 6d each, a few being sold at Is. BEDUCTION IN SHIPPING FEEIGHTS. The rate of freight on Newcastle coal for Now Zealand has been reduced iy 2s 6d per ton as from February 1. This makes a reduction of 5s per ton within the last three or four mouths.

WOOL SALE REPORT. The following are some of the top-priced lota sold on Monday by the National Mortgage and! Agency Co. of New Zealand, Ltd,, who offered, a catalogue of 2914 bales and sold 95 per' cent. Although this was tb« last catalogue to be offered, competition was very spirited, and prices were fully up to the catalogues sold earlier in the day.
