AN OUTPOST OF ODDFELLOWSHIP.

Tho Independent Order of Oddfellows is firmly established in several continents and many countries, including New Zealand, whore its activities extend literally from Auckland to Bluff. New lodges are opened from time to time, end the latest one is known a* Tahakopa Lodge No. 91, its headquarters being Tahakopa, situated amid picturesque surroundings at the terminus of tho Gatlins River line, in a district of which such men as Sir Thomas Mackenzie, tho late Mr M. Fca, and Dr Truby King have said and written much in praise. With the clearing’ of the bush dairy farming will come into its own, but in the meantime sawmilling is the chief industry. The lodge was opened on Wednesday evening last, when there were present ■visitors from Leith and Unity Lodges (Dunedin), Owaka Lodge, and Pioneer of Southland Lodge (Invercargill). Bro. L. Deans Ritchie, G.T.. attended on bohalf of the Grand Lodge of Now Zealand, for tho purpose of instituting the new lodge and Installing the officers, and was assisted by .G.L. Rep. Bro. M'Donald, N.G. Bro. Rogers, and Bro< Fahey,, all of Owaka Lodge. There was an excellent attendance, and tho following officers were installedN.G., Bro. Poultney; V.G. Bro. J. White; Sec., Bro. G. R. M‘Nutt; Trees., Bro. Stoddart; Warden. Bro. Hunt; Cond, Bro. Fulton; Chap., Bro. Moir; R.S.S., Bro. Jonks; L.S.S., Bro. Dawson; R.S.N.G., Bro. Shaw; L.S.N.G., Bro. Randall; R.S.V.G., Bro. Morris; L.S.V.G, Bro. Martin; 1.G.. Bro. Kirkland; 0.G., Bro. R. Poultney. Following on the installation supper was served, and several vocal and elocutionary items wore contributed by Bros.. Hunt and Moir. On the lodge resuming, a considerable amount of important business was transacted, including the adoption of a medical scheme and tho election of trustees, those elected being Bros. R. G. Poultney, J. White an d.Tames Morris. Tho singing of "Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem brought a -very successful and fraternal meeting to a dose at an hour which, though somewhat early for the 5.55 a.m. train, loft considerably loss than tho ordinary time for repose for those who had to catch it.
