A MUSICAL TREAT

NEW SOUTH WALES STATE ORCHESTRA. Messrs J. and N. Tait announce that arrangements have now been definitely fixed for the New South Wales State Orchestra, of 80 players, to give a musical festival in His Majesty’s Theatre commencing on Thursday February 9, with additional concerts on February 10, 11, and 13. Mr Henri Verbmgghen, the famous Belgian musician, will be the conductor, and the remarkable enthusiasm aroused on the occasion of the orchestra’s first tour of the dominion promises to bo repeated, judging by the groat reception given to it at the opening concerts in Auckland. Mr Vcrbrugg’hen and his brilliant band of instrumentalists have created a wonderful reputation in' Australia and Now Zealand since its' inception live yeans ago. Originally established to create a standard for orchestral performances, and to provide opportunities for students of the Conscrvatorium to hear orchestral works, which would otherwise remain unknown to them, it has aroused public interest to such an extent that it has now became entirely national in diameter, and is air essential factor in the musical life in Australia, whoro it has exercised a remarkable influence on tho education of (ho general public to an appreciation of the highest art examples of the master musicians. For the Dunedin festival, Mr Yorbmigghon has carefully chosen a set of programmes drawn from standard orchestral works, and calculated to display' to the fullest extent the. orchestra's talents. The programme will bo selected from the following works:—Overtures; “Oboron.” “Sappho,” “Tho Flying Dutchman,” “William Toll,” “Magic Flute,” “Amidst Nature,” “Tannhauser,” “Tho Masterdngera” “Figaro.” “Mignon.” “Fingal’s Cave,” and the famous “1812” overture of Tsdiai kowsky’s. Miscellaneous works indude:—“Molodreme” from “Piccolino,” “Hungarian Dance” (Brahms-Paiiow). “Alburn Loaf’ (Wagner), “Le Bouet d’Omphalc” (Saint Seans), Symphonic Poem “Finlandia” (Sibelius), Meditation “Thais” Massenet, “Invitation to tho Waltz” (Weber), Rhapsodies No. 1 and 2 (Liszt), Gavotte from “Mignon,” Andante from Quartet (Tsdhaikowsky), “Shepherd’s Hey” (Percy Grainger), Capriccio Italien (Tsehaikowsky), Prelude and “Love Death” (“Tristan and Isolde”) (Wagner), Gavotte (Gluok), Prelude to “Lohengrin” and Prelude to Act IT “T/ohcngrin” (Wagner), “Blue Danube” Waltz (Strauss). “Death and Transfiguration” (Strauss), Symphonic Poem “Dance Macabre” (Saint Sacns), Symphonic suite “Scheherazade” (Rimsky Korsakoff), Variations from Suite No. 3 (Tsobaikowsky), Two “Songs Without Words” _ (Monde lissohn), Tangi and “Waiati Poi” (Alfred Hill). Hungarian March from “Faust” (Berlioz), “Enigma,” variations of Elgar, excerpts from the Wagnerian operas, four short pieces for orchestra by Alfred Hill, and tho famous Beethoven Symphony “Eroica.” Tho box plans for the four concerts will open at the Bristol on Tuesday, February 7.
