THE AGED POOR

PROVISION OF HOMES NECESSARY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 26.? “The State should provide a home for those people whoso only crime is that they have no friends,” stated Mr Wyvorn Wilson. S.M., in the court to.-day when a wizened, well-dressed old woman was brought up on remand, charged with being an incorrigible rogue, as she had no_ visible lawful means of support. “This brings up a matter,” said Mr Wilson, “that 1 and other magistrates have been stressing for years. The State should provide a home to which a magistrate may commit these persons—a homo where some restraint may be exercised. At the present time all a magistrate can do is to convict and discharge those persons on condition that they go to a home. They are not obliged to stay in that homo. They become tired, leave the home, , drift to the streets, and are charged with another crime. Tho only fault with these people is that they have no friends, money, 'or home. The provision of an adequate home is everybody’s business,' and consequently is nobody’s business, and so things drift on. There is a great need in the dominion for a homo for the aged poor. Homes could be orovMed by regulation, gazetting some of the homes under the control of charitable aid boards as such homes for these old people. Amongst the bequests made by tho lato ( M* John Blundell, of Wellington, are the following ’£soo for memorial window in St. Peter’s Church, Wellington; balance, if any, to be given to the church fund; £SOO to tho City :of Wellington for public purposes, with .discretionary power to tho trustees ’that the money, or any part of it, may he devoted to the purchase of a clock for the clock. tower of tho Wellington Town Hall; £IOO to tho Levin Memorial Home, Borhamporc; £IOO to the Ladies’ Christian Association, Wellington ; £IOO to St. Mary’s Anglican Home, Karori; £IOO to the St. Helens Maternity Home, Coromandel street, Wellington; £IOO to the Wellington branch of the Plunkct Society; £SOO to.be divided between such employees of Messrs Blundell Bros., Ltd., who shall bo in the service of Messrs Blundell Bros., Ltd., at his death and shall have been in the service of Messrs Blundell Bros., Ltd., for a continuous period of 20 years or ovc rimmcdiately prior to his death.
