Now that the Criminal Sessions are over, wo cannot refrain from making a few remarks on them. . . Although the present Circuit Court is not the first that has been held in Otago, it is the first since the disco vpry of the Goldfields. . . . Mr Justice Gresson has shown his inadequate appreciation of the condition of this Province. We do full justice to the unwearying _ patience with which .he assists in elucidating the intricacies of the cases brought under his notice, to the impartial manner in which he decides on every point that arises during . their progress, and to the lucid charges with which he commits the decisions to the jury, but we cannot refrain from Lamenting that through rn imperfect appreciation of the social con. dition of the Province, he has so inadequately apportioned the penalties f o r offences as to offer a direct premium for their commission. We ore not putting the case too strongly when we say that should the account of the sentences in the various cases tried this season meet . the eyes of the veteran followers of crime in the neighbouring colonies, they will consider this eo much a safer theatre for their operations that they will be tempted at once to transfer their guilt burdened careers lo Dtago. ... We are glad to observe that a really good coat of metal is now laid on the road leading from Prinoes-street to the Beach. This will be a great boon to everyone con”«cted with the discharge of lighters on the beach, as this road is the only means of approach. The importation of fruit from Victoria, is becoming very extensive. Large quantities of apples, pears, peaches, plums, etc., arrive by every steamer, and are usually landed in excellent condition.
