MONTHLY MEBUNIG OF THE BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the High Schools’ Board of Governors, held yesterday, afternoon, was attended by Dr Fulton (chairman). Messrs J. M. Galloway, J. C. Stephens. H. Webb, W. R Brugh, and the Mayor (Mr J. S. Douglas). The Treasury notified the follcfwing payments to the credit of the board’s account: Boys’ High School Rectory, £400; grant for teachers’ salaries, £1000; grant for incidentals, £l9O 12s 6d; capitation for manual and science classes, £193 6s; secondary reserves rents, September quarter, £316 9a sd.—Received. In dealing with the accounts Mr Callaway drew attention to the expense incurred in the printing of the reports in connection with the two schools, the total amount being £63. He suggested that the rector and lady principal should consider the advisabloneefl of having only a typewritten report, with carbon copies, a copy to be retained at the school and another lodged with tho secretary. After discussion it was decided to set up a committee consisting of Messrs Gallaway, Stephens, and Professor Thomson to confer with the rector and lady principal in regard to the question of the reports, some members thinking that means could perhaps be found to curtail the expense without being too drastic. _ The committee is also to consider certain matters in relation to prizes. Mi'os F. M. Allan wrtjte thanking the board for the illuminated address and handsome present made her by the board on prize-giving day in connection with her retirement from the poeition of lady principal. Major Putfcick, on behalf of tho New Zealand Rifle Brigade Trustees, forwarded the following letter m connection with the General Fulton Memorial Bursary;— In further reply to your letter of October 19 I have to inform you thdt a meeting of tho Board of Trustees was held on the 29th lift, when the following decisions were made:—That the General Harry Fulton Memorial Bursary be allotted to the Otago Boys’ High School on the following conditions:—<l) The sum of £350 to bo paid to the Board of Governors, Otago Boy a High School, to be invested, the interest on the same to be awarded annually as a bursary on the following lines; The bursary to be awarded to a boy selected on a system of marks based ai under; 50 per cent, for mental work, 50 per cent for physical work, the method of selection to be left in the hands of the school authorities. (2) The sum of £lO Sa 3d (less exchange) to be paid to the Board of Governors to be expended by that board at its discretion to provide a tablet, photograph, or other means of commemorating the memory of General Fulton, and to identify him with the bursary. I therefore have much pleasure in forward - in" you my cheque for the sum of £360 Ss M, with the request that exchange be deducted from this amount, and that your board should lie good enough to apply the balance in accordance with the decisions of the Board of Trustees as set out above.” The board decided to refer the letter to the rector to report regarding the use to be made of tho bursary, and to suggest terms. . _ ’The Education Department wrote approving of additional expenditure to the amount of £375 in connection with tho rectory building.
