GENEROUS GIFTS

TWO ANONYMOUS DONATIONS OF £IOO,OOO BACH, SYDNEY, January 18. The traditional secrecy regarding the proceedings at Masonic meetings has been broken in a very notable respect. So, at least, thinks Mr, diaries Kolling, a well--known member of the craft in Sydney and a past mas ter of Lodge Mount Morgan, Queenslaftd, and ho is very annoyed about it. But Masons and non-Masons alike will plead that nothing very dire shall fall upon the head of whoever may have been responsible for the breach. All were naturally anxious to know what manner of man the “Old Brother” was who, as was announced recently, had given practically his entire fortune, amounting to £IOO,OOO, for the founding in Sydney of a Masonic Institution for the education and upbringing of orphans in necessitous circumstances and desired that _ his name should not be divulged. During the week it lias transpired that Mr Kolling was that man, and despite the resentment that ho evinced at the publicity given to this foot, be has been showered with congratulations upon this , generous act of himself and his wife. Mr Kolling is an American by birth, and ho has spent many years in Australia, where he has been interested principally in mine engineering undertaking*. A gift of a similar sum to this has recently been made by another anonymous donor to one of the Sydney hospitals, so that evidently the end of the war did not put a quietus to generous giving.
