HIGHER EDUCATION

SPECIALISATION IN' UNIVERSITIES. (Fbou Oob Own Cobbkspondent.) AUCKLAND, January 16. Higher education was the subject'of some' remarks to-day by Sir Robert Stout, Chan- . cellor of the New Zealand University.’ Sir Robert Stout stated that'the State, in Great Britain gave benefactions, to ‘'universities, riot in 'any definite or devised way, but simply as it was considered that jjpivensities required assistance. For example, Ox- | ford and Cambridge did not receive any : aid directly, and the Government pave sums of, money to. newer .universitiee only. ' But i those were hot-given as a definite pd#.' The -amount granted was £23 per student, whereas the giants to ’ Irish. universities > were at the rate of £39 ..per .student, and tie grants to Scottish universities-£l3 per student. Sir Robert Stout stated that Scotland had be?n greatly aided by a Carnegie gift and the university authorities there > had been very careful with their finances. All universities would'like more- money, , but one thing to be remembered, particularly in New Zealand was that the country could not afford tq £ive aid for all subjects in higher education at each college.; ■ He had made this plain in 1885 and 1886. j and had said that colleges would have to specialise. The ■ dominion could not support four medicdl schools or four mining* engineering, and’musical schools, or schools of architecture. Sir Robert Stout said that one university college could not give .all that was necessary on higher education. Colleges would have to specialise. He objected to all the higher branches of educalion being taught in ell the colleges.' There were special schools in New. Zealand, and these must be viewed in just the same manner that similar'special schools in Great , Britain were ■ viewed, simply because their finances would not permit these, hpeoial schools to be conducted at each university.
