PORT MOLYNEUX SPORTS

Perfect weather conditions were experienced for the annual sports meeting of the Port Molyneux Caledonian -Society, held at Wilsher. Bay on Monday. The outstanding beauty of tho sports ground is in itself sufficient to attract a largo number ot visitors from far and near to- tho society s annual sports gathering. On one side is the sea front, while the other three smes are fringed with beautiful native bash, along the edge of. which tho pretty tut* o river known as Karori Creek flows placidly along. In one corner of the ground nestles the tennis Courts, carved out. as it were, from tho bush. The ground, it may be mentioned, is of considerable histone interest, as it was once tho site of the whaling station, which will still be remembered by some of the early pioneers. Tho attendance was good, and although tho gate takings were not quite up to last year’s (£127), tho opinion generally was that they wore not far short. _ When the amusement tax, which was imposed this year, is deducted, the takings will be about £l2l. To give an idea of the popularity of the place for a New Year’s Day outing, a count was made of the various conveyances. Around the sports ground, including the lovely sheltered spot up Karon Creek, there wore 154 motor cars, 305 traps of all sorts, and 23 motor cycles and side cars, while from the grounds to what is known as Cunningham’s Comer, there was another 87 motor cars, 28 traps, and 12 motor cycles. The sports meeting itself was a great success, there being good entries and some very exciting finishes. The efforts of the secretary (Mr A. M. Wylie) and the committee that works with him resulted in the excitement being kept up till the last item on the programme had been ‘completed. There Were 167 entries all told and, with the exception of the 14m and 16m chops, the events were all post entry. The lollowing are the results: 14-INOH UNDERHAND CHOP HANDICAP.—J.
