The last-named a fine performance by R. T. Tosswill, of Christchurch. In the four-ball J. H. Drake, one of the winning pair, went out in 53, his card in itself showing 6 up at the ninth green. Tosswill /(Christchurch), 4 up and 3 to play. 1 Final. M. W. Horton beat M. Macbeth, 3 up and 1 to play. In his match with Tosswill in the semifinal Horton duffed his tee shot at the first hole, but made a good recovery, and halved in five. Tosswill won the second hole with a good four, but the third and fourth went to Horton, leaving him one up. He also won the fifth in four, two up. At the sixth Tosswill was laid a dead stymie, and tho hole was ' halved. The seventh ! went to Horton, and the eighth and ninth were halved, leaving Horton two up. The tenth was halved in four, arid Tipperary went to Horton in five, malting him three up. The eleventh and twelfth were halved, and Horton won Roy’s fri four. ' Tho fifteenth hole was halved, giving Horton a win on the match, 4 and 5. O. B. Wight, the holder of the championship, was beaten by Macbeth alter a dose game, which was carried' to the nineteenth green. The first hole was halved in four. At the second, both got good drives away. Wight pitching up nicely on the green and Macbeth to the left. Wight missed his putt .for three, and the hoi© was halved in four. The .third went to Maobeth in four, arid the fourth to Wight in three. At the fifth both got the top of the hill" with their seconds, Maobeth pitching dovpi short. The hole was halved in five. The players, wore short of the green at the sixth hole. Wight pitched up too far, and the hole was Halved in four.. At the seventh Macbeth put his second on the green. Wight' pitched ,up nicely, and the note was halved in four. At the eighth both made good drives, and the hole was halved in four. The Glen iwas also halved in -four —all square ! at ’ the turn. At the T tenth both got' their seconds well on the green, and the hole was halved in four. At the eleventh the seconds were well down to the trees. Macbeth hit hard up to the left of the green, Wight just being short. Macbeth overran with his fourth and missed /his putt for five, Wight going mto the hole. At the twelfth Macbeth failed to get clown m four, and Wight wpn in three. ' At tho thirteenth Wight drove into the ditch, and Macbeth, going well over the hill, halved in four. Macbeth was just short of the green with his tee shot at the fourteenth, and Wight half-duffed his ball halfway to the green.’ Wight pitched up too.far, and Macbeth lay within a yard, but missed his putt for three, and the hole was halved in four. At the fifteenth Wight played a weak second and went short of tho green. Maobeth got nicely on the edge in three and holed opt in five. At the sixteenth Macbeth sliced his drive into the rough grass, Wight being well down in the 1 fairway. Maobeth’ mode a recovery half-way to the green. Tho hole was halved in five. At tho seventeenth Wight got well up to the loft of the green. Macbeth, however, put his second. through tho green, pitched up nicely, and the hole was halved in if our. At the eighteenth the .score waa .all square, tho hole being halved in four. At tho nineteenth Macbeth got a screaming drive away. Wight ako got well away from the tee, but was just short with his second. Maobeth put his mashifc nicely on the green. Wight pitched up within a yard, but missed the putt, while Macbeth, lying for the throe, wont down, and won a notable match ■brilliantly. Macbeth defeated Wight for the St. Clair Club Championship lash: year by a narrow margin, but the golf on' that occasion waa ’ nothing like, the quality of yesterday. . , The final was followed by a good many people, including quite a number of ladies, and the following was rewarded with a display of really: fine golf; played with real sportsmanship. Both players started, with good drives, but Macbeth topped his second into the rough, and it took him four to reach tho green. Horton, approaching weakly, gave him a chance to halve the hole, but his putt missed, and Horton was in bogey five. Both drives from the second tee found the rough, Horton’s in the rushes to tlje right of the fairway, and Macbeth’s well up tho hill to the left. Both were on the green in three, gnd Macbeth, who was much nearer to the hole, missed an easy putt, and had to be content with a half. Horton drove into the rough, but played a beautiful approach, and got\the nest hole in three. While Macbeth, whose dnyo ended near the corner of tho green, took four. Tho fourth hole produced a similar result. Macbeth drove through tne green, and required two putts, while an approach and one putt sufficed for Horton. At the fifth (Terrace) Horton’s drive landed the ball on a hard obstruction . from which it bounded back, and Macbeth had an advantage of about 40 yards, enabling him with on easy mashie shot to reach the edge of the green, Horton duffed his second, and getting into trouble with his third surrendered the hole. Maobeth had an indifferent drive at the next, and played a mashie shot through the gfosn with his third, Horton, whose drive finished close to the green, approached gently and 6un k a putt for 3. At the seventh hole Macbeth’s drive carried the bunker away to the right, opening up a clear approach to tho green for him. His second, however, placed his ball on the bluff overlooking, the green. Horton, in the meantime, had played his second on to the ridge running down , to the green, but his approach stopped short of the green. Maobeth was on the green with his third, and getting a putt down of about 20ft, captured tho hole. . The eighth was also secured by him, Horton, 'with the shorter thrive, overshot the green with his second, and playing back again went through. Maobeth landed his second shot nicely on the green with a mashie and holed out in 4. Horton was again out-driven at the Gleri, but his ball lay in the fairway, and a straight mashie shot placed his second on the green. Macbeth somewhat sliced his drive so that a hump lay between him and tho green. Ho hod played the odd before ha was on,- the green, and Horton taking two putts, mode sure of the hole. Horton, 2 up at tho turn; .had tho longer drive at the tenth, and was a few feet past tho pin with. his second. Maobeth was short with the odd. and was then stymied by Horton’s putt, making it impossible for him to save the hole. Maobeth had a long drive to Tipperary (570 yards), but it was away to the right on the slope down to the fourteenth' tee. Horton - foozled his second, while Macbeth’s placed him in a good position for reaching the green with, his third. Horton’s third put him in a difficult lie at the foot of' one of tho trees guarding the approach to the green, and though Macbeth imperilled his chance by hooking his third he was able to win the’’ hole in “bogey.” His drive to the twelfth took him to the edge of the green, while Horton’s was pushed out to the right dangerously close to the ditch. however, approached excellently and got the hole in 3—a fine recovery—Macbeth failing with his putts. _ Horton drove to the top of tho hul while Macbeth drove so far over it that his ball stopped in the waterhazard. He was close to the green with his second, Horton still playing the odd, and with a good putt he claimed the hole. Macbeth drove on to tho green at Roy's (195 yards), while Horton went through it into an awkward lie at tho foot of the hill, and though tho latter approached well ho could not, like Maobeth, hole out in 3. Both played the next hole well, tho drive, an iron shot, a short approach, and a putt giving! them each the hole in -I—one tinder “bogey.” Playing Hawthorn, both were in the fairway approaching the green with their seconds, but while Horton’s third lay dead Maobeth played short and then missed his putt. Horton, “dormy” two, was through the green at the seventeenth while Macbeth’s ball lay in some long grass to the right. Macbeth was short with a mashie approach, and Horton, making no mistake, took the hole in 5 and won the match. Horton waa the better in the short game almost all through, and to this he owed his success, for Macbeth consistently outdrove him. Tho latter, being only in his twenty-first year, has plenty of time before him in which to win championships. Horton was playing his last game as a resident of Dunedin, for, being a member of the Union Steam Ship Company’s head office staff, he has to report at Wellington

this week. The play in the final was several strokes/ below that in some of the other matches in tho tournament!
