The Australasian, athletio championships opened! on Adelaide Oval in favourable weather. _ Counter-attractions interfered slightly with, the attendance. A big feature was the presence of the South African team in addition to the Australasian champions. Competition was spirited and was the finest ever seen in Adelaide. Button won the quartei>mile strongly by four yards. Eeid broke the javelin record, as Honner did the broad jump. Newman made a splendid finish in the mile, defeating Grandomange at the worsted. Parker won all the way'in the three miles' walk, show-, ing good style, Rouse put the shot 38ft 2m, securing an easy win. The hurdles was run straight out, Edmunds defeating Edward* and Munro in 15 3-10seo, a record. New South Wales secured six firsts and Victoria three. (Received Jan. 2, at 7.5 p.m.) Tho sub-committee appointed by the Australian Athletic Conference reported that New 1 Zealand should be exempted from further participation in the prescribed series of Australasian championships with the substitution of biennial Australasian championships and biennial home and home contests between New Zealand and combined Australia- Tho sub-committee also recommended that relay races of half-mile, quar-ter-mile and 220 yards bo added to the programme.
