C.J.C. MEETING. CANTERBURY CUP DAY. NOTES BY SENTINEL. CHRISTCHURCH, November 6. Tho Now Zealand Cup meeting was continued in showery weather of a mild nature, and not heavy enough to affect the state of tho course, which provided good going. There was an excellent attendance, find the card provided some of the most interesting sport ever seen on the course. Close and exciting finishes were the order of tho day, Amythas smashed up tho opposition in the Canterbury Cup in fine style, and has again proved himself to be one of the-beat horses that lias ever sported silk in the dominion. He stayed on in fine style, and the result was never in doubt after he strode to tho front half -a mite from home. The Jockey Club Handicap was a fin© race, and there was very little between tho placed three as they flashed past tho post. The result suggests that neither Tamateto nor Grotesque stay, and form worked out welt. Taking a line through Winning Hit’s win in the Dunedin Guineas Pluto was entitled to a good chance. Silver Link was never in the picture. Palestrina won so well that it is matter of regre,t tbit her engagement in the Derby was allowed to lapse, as she must have given Winning Hit a good gallop' for classic honours. St. Easel finished well when in the Ashley, and must be dangerous on Saturday.

The card concluded with a great finish in the Avon Welter, in which Castellan,. Humboldt, and Songbird passed the post' almost in lino. Ore Ore was elected a strong order for the Port Cooper Hurdles, and again the race became a duel between him and Maniahera. Genera'! Petain made the running with Maniahera, with Ore Ore in close attendance. As they turned for home Maniahera was just in front of General Petain, As they landed over the lust hurdle Maniahera looked all over a winner, but Ore Ore wore him down in a good finish, and beat him by a neck. General Petain was almost four lengths away, followed by Whipcord, Staff Officer, and Sir Fanciful. General Potoin jumped much better than on the first day. and at the same rate of improvement should bo harder m beat on Saturday. Good Start fell at the second last hurdle, and none of the others had a chance with the two Farceur and Veil were hacked down to. a very short pn'-e in the Spring Nursery, probably in the hope of them finishing first and second, and, paying one dividend. Farccu - won handsomely, but Prosperity and Tied Kriss both beat Vcib although they had no chance with the winner, who is a fine, stvlish-looking colt. Ho benefited considerably by bis race in the Welcome Stakes. Apnl Follv. Waetea. and Balderdash were well un in the early stages, but Red Kriss did not begin welt as - when he won on Monday. Tlie field got away'* to an excellent start in the Otaio Plate. and Rebuff led Mnzama out of the straight. Mazama joined Rebuff going along the back. Esperance got knocked right back before reaching the four furlong post, and Mazama drew out before reaching the straight, and keeping rpnr. won by two lengths from Bonnv Maid. Warlove was a moderate third, followed by Caverook and Hioro, The bump administered to Esperance settled her chance. Great interest was taken in the Canterbury Cup. in which it was claimed that as the weight-for-age scale favoured three-year-olds when running over a distance • of ground, Cnpidon would beat Amythas. Tt was. however, overlooked that Amythas is quite mi exceptional horse, and one quite good enough to upset established theory. Cunidon carried over £369 more on the totalisator .than Amythas. Oupidon at, once set a solid paoe, and was still in charge, when racing along the back, with Amythas handv, and the others close up, Sasanof being in the rear. Racing past the four furlong post Amythas came on from Cnpidon. and striding along, won by three lengths from Royal Star; who beat Starland by four lengths, followed by Penitent end Cnpidon. Amythas received rounds of

applause as he came back to the sealed. The position occupied by Royal Star shows that his win in the New Zealand Cup was no fluke, and also that he should have won the Metropolitan Handicap. The sectional times of the race were: six furlongs, Imin If) 3-ssec; 10 furlongs, 2min 12sec; ; 12 furlongs, 2tnin 37seo; 14 furlongs, 3min 3 4-5?eo; and the full distance, Sillin' 54 4-6 sec. The Jockey Club Handicap was a great race The public went very strongly for Tamatcle. The field got away from a good line, and Tamalcte and Pitprop at once drew clear, and were followed by Affectation and Pluto. After going a couple of furlongs Tamatetc had- Pitprop beaten. The latter got badly bumped as he dropped back. Approaching the distance Pluto had Tamateto beaten, and then Affectation and Royal 'Mac put in their claims, and in a great race home Pluto beat Affectation by a head, whilst Royal Mac was another head away. Tamatete was about four lengths off, followed by Trespass and Purple Spur. They ran the first half in „48 3-ssec, and the hot pace helped to settlfCTamatete and Pitprop, ns well as most of the field. Those who remembered the race Pluto gave Winning Hit in the Dunedin Guineas gave_ him a good chance in the race. At the weights Affectation ran a great race, and was gradually wearing down Pluto as they reached the post. Kilcullon lent additional interest to the Oaks Stakes by streaking away to about a dozen lengths’ lead from Cleasanta as they turned into the back stretch. She was still well clear at the turn into the straight, where Palestrina, who had made up a lot of ground, drew up with Cleasanta. Palestrina, however, came on and won easily by two lengths from Cleasanta. It' was a good performance on the part of the winner, as at the mile post she must have been fully 15 lengths away from the leader. Kilcullcn just lasted long enough to beat Princess Pat for third place. The form displayed by Palestrina is sure to boom Oiarcncciix as a sire, and there is no doubt bo promises to prove a very valuable addition to our bloodstock.

Whipping Boy and Kerb got well away in the Ashley Handicap, and ran together to tho straight. Whipping Boy had Kerb beaten before reaching the distance, but Silent King, who was always handy, drew up and won by a neck. St. Easel came with a late run and finished one length and a-half away. Bonnie Winkie was close up, fourth, and then came Valdamo and Tho Heaver. Kerb ran like a non-stayer, and judging by her form, six furlongs is about as far as she can go at present. Silent King ran the best race he has shown for some time, and now that he lias struck form should win again. ' In the Avon Welter Tatau Tatau got well away, and also Tinihanga, Humboldt, and Songbird; whilst after going a couple of furlongs Caliaghan and Scrimmage were knocked back last. Tatau Tatau led into the straight from Songbird, Humboldt, and Castellan. Tatau Tatau retired at the distance, and in a good fighting finish Castellan beat Humboldt by u short head, with Songbird half a length’ off. third. Rose Wreath was close up foufth, followed by Miss Gold and Tatau Tatau. Emerson rodoan excellent race, and made a \vell-timed and vigorous effort at the finish, widen resulted in a win by the narrowest of margins. Rose Wreath ran a good race tinder her weight, and may be found doing better on the final day of the meeting.

GOLF The Otago Golf 'Club and flic Ladies’ Club bold a combined foursome Bogey match at Ralmacewen yesterdnv afternoon. Despite some showers, a really enjoyable game to suited, and it is generally hoped that the fixture means the resumption of the old social relations that prevailed prior to the war, when monthly matches were held. The scoring yesterday was not particularly good, hut the winning cards (two down) are not discreditable. The result was a tie between Mr W. F. Edmond and Mrs Cook and H. Breach and Miss Theomi.'V
