A CONSTABLE ASSAULTED

Early on Sunday morning, while Constable Fisher was patrolling Stafford street, he was suddenly, and without warning, set upon savagely by two young men. The constable was passing a shop, when one of the men threw ofl his coat and dived into him. The constable throw his antagonist, but the other man, coming to the assistance of his companion, dealt the constable heavy blows from behind. In _ the struggle the window of the Bristol Piano Company’s premises, valued at £6O, was broken to atoms. The assailants made good their escape, but were identified by Constable Fisher and arrested yesterday. Constable Fisher was severely handled, and lost a considerable quantity of blood, but his injuries are not considered serious. The new system of keeping the main street lighted all night was of great benefit, as it enabled Constable Fisher to identify his assailants as James Raymond Walsh, aged 26" years, and Arthur Percival Carr, aged 22 years. They appeared in the Magistrate’s Court to-day and were charged with assaulting Constable Fisher on Sunday morning. Senior-sergeant Fahey said the police were collecting evidence, and asked for a remand till Thursday, which was granted, bail being allowed each of the accused at £2OO and two sureties of £IOO each.
