POLICE INSPECTORS

POWERS AS J.P.’s. (Pkb United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, August 12. The latest list of appointments of Justices of the Peace contains the names of four police inspectors. These appointments do not establish any new precedent. The Armed Constabulary Act, which was the forerunner of the Police Force Act, 1E66, by virtue of which rnanv present members of the police force hold tfieir ajipointments, provided that every commandant and inspector, after having taken oaths of. oflicc shall beoome, without further qualification or appointment, and continue so long as ho shall hold such office, but no longer, a Justice of the Peace. The practice of making such appointments has been followed, and it has been found in practice that the appointment of commissioned police officers as J.P.’s has been exceedingly useful and convenient to the public. Such officers do not preside over the bench even in civil cases, hut have ordinary powers to take the bail of persons in custody, and to take affidavits and statutory declarations.
