GRAND NATIONAL MEETING. THE SECOND DAY. (Fhom Oub Own Reporter.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 11. The Grand National meeting was continued, in fine weather, and an excellent attendance viewed the card for the second day of the gathering. The track had firmed up since the opening day, and although the going was a bit dead it was still what might be regarded as quite sound for this time of the year. The principal item of the day was deprived of considerable interest owing to the withdrawal of Alteration, who developed lameness and could not be sent to the poet. Ho had been the ruling favourite since winning at tho Wellington winter meeting, and those who took early anticipating another success at Riocarton burnt their fingers. Multive was elected a strong favourite, and good support also came for Kauri King, who was distinctly sore when doing his preliminary. Fisher carried the confidence of most of the Auckland brigade, who also supported Thrace. Demagogue was in good favour, and Gamecock, who cannot bo relied upon to run a genuine race, went out a slightly better favourite than Gladful and Mill o’ Cowrie, who carried Mr Kemball’e colours. The Dunedin horse Whipcord was absolutely tho rank outsider, and if mope use had been made of him he would have at least been second. As it was he was. giving away a dozen or fifteen lengths over tho last circuit when he was running last, with one who is at times a rank duffer in Gamecock. Mill o’ Gowrie set a strong pace in favour of her stable mate, Gladful, who drew to the front in the straight and won handsomely by a good margin from Kauri King, who had to be hunted right out to beat VVhipcord, who has lost more than one race through bad riding instructions. After the field had travelled over a oouplo of miles Demagogue, Multive, Fisher, Thrace, and Crosswords all appeared to hold a good fighting chance, but when heads were m line for home Gladful was the oply one in the race. Coroglen was elected a pronounced favourite for the Beaufort, and being always well up, ho took charge a long way from home and won comfortably. He fenced much better than in the Grand National, but he did not liave the same mistake mod© with him as when sent out to dispute the leadership with such an excellent fencer as Woimai. First Lino over-jumped at tho fipst leg of tho stand double, and dropped his rider, who made a big effort to get back to the saddle after being bumped on to his mount's nock. Non© of the others had a chance. Bebehead just scratched home in the Woolston, but Tigerland had an easy win in the Hunt Cup. Cantoris registered the easy win of the day whfen he scored in the Summer Handicap, in which he was pursued home by two Dunedin horses. Tresso may run a lot better on Saturday. Callaghan was a strong order for the August Handicap, but was never in the picture. Mustard Dot won in fine style from Fabrinude and Corn Rigs, who drew No. 11 at the barrier, and ran a good race after starting from such a bad position. Tigritiya tired badly, after looking all over a winner when landing over the last hurdle in the Spreydon, and Royal Star, Miss Muriel, and Bonnie Maid each, ran well in the Islington, after drawing extreme outside position at the barrier—a serious handicap in a mile and a-quarter race decided at Riccarton. Heather Sprig also ran an excellent race after being in company with the two named above at the tail of tho field at the mile post. Moutoa Ivanova had a bad passage, and was sent from being handy to the leaders to the tail of the field half a mils from home. During the day the investments ran to £05,069, as against £72,528 last year. Results:— WOOLSTON HANDICAP, Of SOOspvs. Six furlongs. H. Fisher's Bebehead, 9.8 (F. Voight) ~ I F. W.
