WARWICKSHIRE MATCH. COUNTY BATSMEN COLLAPSE. AN INNINGS DEFEAT. Preu Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, August 9. The Australians declared their innings closed with the overnight scores—viz., seven wicicets for 312 runs. The weather was fine and the wicket firm after rolling. The attendance was 3000 on resinning. Armstrong declared at the overnight score, and Warwickshire went in again. Bates and .Fiddian-Green faced Gregory and M'Donald. The first four overs u ;re maidens, and from the first seven only six runs were scored. In half an hour the total had reached 22, of which Bates claimed 20. At 27 Armstrong relieved M'Donald, and got Fiddian-Green stumped. Bates, when 23, played a yorker into his wicket. Quaife then partnered Charlesvvorth, and at 43 M‘Donald came back in place* of Gregory, and off his first over Armstrong brilliantly caught Quaife. Gharlesworth and Holdsworth carried the total to 63, the half-century taking 65 minutes, at which stage Chorloswortb was caught by Ryder. Just previously M‘Donald had dropped him off Armstrong. The wickets fell fast luncheon. Scorer failed to negotiate one of M'Donald’s full pitches, and Holdsworth played the same bowler on. Smart spooned one to Collins. Seven for 89. Oldfield bagged Partridge, and then Cross partnered Rotherham, who was missed by Taylor in the long-field off Armstrong when he had only a single on. This pair brought the score to 112 before M'Donald found Rotherham’s stumps, and the end came when M'Donald bowled Howell. Cable. The Australians’ captain took no chances when he closed his side’s innings against Warwickshire on Tuesday morning at the over-night total. Probably he was influenced to a desire to get the team down to London on Tuesday evening, and then to avoid a night journey prior to the match against Kent, which was to begin yesterday. The Warwickshire Eleven, among whom were included two prominent University batsmen—C. A. Fiddian-Green (Cambridge), and R. L. Holdsworth (Oxford)—failed so badly in their second innings that the match was concluded early on Tuesday afternoon, M'Donald giving another of those fine bowling performances which emphasise the loss that test cricket will suffer if he is to be tempted to accept an engagement as a professional in a Lancashire League team. The final test match will bo commenced at Kennington Oval on Saturday. M'DONALD’S ENGAGEMENT, LONDON, August 9. Despite the Nelson Club’s announcement the Australian Press is authoritatively informed that E. A. M'Donald has not signed, and has merely verbally promised to return from Australia next season; but the members of the team still assert that it is most unlikely that he will leave Australia —A. and N.Z.
