CRICKET.

AUSTRALIA v. OTAGO. OTAGO OUT FOR 12T. GOOD WORK BY LOCAL BOWLERS. The large gathering of cricketers that assembled at tne Town Hall at noon to welcome the Australian team was sufficient indication that the visit is causing no small st;r in local cricketing circles. The match with the Otago representatives drew a crowd of some 151)0 to Ckrisbrook in the afternoon, and tho play was watched with the closest interest, though' there was not a great deal about it to rouse enthusiasm. Some of the schools had a half-holiday for the occasion, and the youngsters who lined the railing proved eager partisans of the local champions. The special wicket which it was at first intended to prepare for the occasion was not utilised, and tho wicket that proved so satisfactory in the Canterbury match was again _ brougnt into requisition. The rain overnight aid not appear to have affected the wicket much, and the dust was rising from it before the end of the day. The outfield, however,' was very dead and heavy, largely on account of the length of the grass. The weather was dull and coldish, and there was no wind to affect tho game. Play began punctually at 2 o’clock. The visitors sent Otago to the wickets, and had tho whole team disposed of by 10 minutes past 4. The brightest display of the day was undoubtedly ,given by Shepherd, who compiled his 24 in quick time by clean, aggressive cricket. His batting was not without mistakes, however, one of which cut short his career. With tho exception of M'Mullan, who patiently and correctly compiled 24 before being caught by Liddicutt off Asher, the remainder of the batsmen formed a somewhat melancholy procession till the last pair—C. Alloo and Casey—were reached. The visitors’ fielding was notably clean and swift, and the men seemed always to be placed to the best advantage. They had the obvious advantage of considerable play together, and combined correctly as if by instinct. They possess a good stock of bowlers, and divided tho work evenly among no fewer than six. When nine wickets had fallen for 86, however, it did seem as though the visitors “let up” a little, and did not trouble to make the most of their attack. Casey and O. Alloo had quite a gay time with Waddy and Bogle, carried the score from 86 to 127 for the last wicket, and shared the top score honours with 25 each. After the ten adjournment Richardson and Asher went to the wickets for Australia, aold local enthusiasm ran high when Alloo caught Richardson off Carlton with the total at 15, of which he had made 10. Asher and Lampard kept quietly adding to the score off A. Alloo and Carlton till Torrance came on the scene at the pavilion end, and caused the thrill of the afternoon with his first over. His second ball took Asher’s wicket. His third hit the incomer, _ Liddicutt, on the foot, and tho fourth Liddicutt dragged on to his wicket. For a few minutes the crowd had visions of a debacle, but Lampard and Dr Bogle settled down to patient, correct cricket, and played out time without accident. All four bowlers —A. Alloo, Carlton, Casey, and Torrance—were sending down good, useful stuff, and were commanding respectful treatment from the batsmen. The Otago fielding was loose and disorganised in comparison with the visitors’ machine-like work, but so far there are no dropped catches to deplore. Messrs C. Chadwick and W. Butler are the umpires, and tho scoring is in the hands of Messrs J. V. Riach and W. Rowlands. Play will recommence at noon to-day. Ransford won the toss and sent Otago to the wickets. Shepherd and A. W. Alloo were the opening pair. Shepherd taking strike to Hornibrook. Shepherd got his second to the off for a smartly-run single, which gave a glimpse of the nippiness of the visitors’ fielding. Alloo played out the rest of the over without incident. Liddicutt took up the bowling,to Shepherd from the end opposite the pavilion. The batsman drove his fourth nicely to the on for 4, and cut the next for a single. ’ Shepherd played Hornibrook’s next over quietly till the bowler sent down a full toss. He drove it to the on, where it was misfielded, and a single resulted. Alloo hit one up dangerously to leg a couple of balls later, but it fell safely and two were run off it. Shepherd brought 10 up by cutting the third of Liddioutt’s next over for a single, but this was the only one the over produced. Shepherd got Hornibrook to leg for a couple, and then drove him almost to the on boundary for 3. Alloo turned tho next to leg for a single; then Shepherd pulled Hornibrook to the off for 2, and delighted the crowd by lifting the last of the over almost to the boundary for 4—20 up. Alloo got Liddicutt luckily between the slips for 2, bat a couple of balls later he was given out Ibw.—l—s—24. Bell was the incomer, and played out the two remaining balls of the over. Shepherd drove Hornibrook’s fifth strongly to the boundary, and then cut him for a single. Bell brought 30 up and opened his own score by cutting Hornibrook finely for 1, but his next ball clean bowled Shepherd.—2—24—3o. Of the total of 30 the retiring batsman had scored 24. He had some fine powerful scoring shots, but several mistakes had made ’his friends nervous. M’Mullan was the incomer. Bell cut Liddioutt’s first for a single, and then M’Mullan turned him to leg for a well-run 3. In the next over M’Mullan got Hornibrook to leg for 1, and later got him almost to fine leg boundary for 3. A cut of Bell’s added a single. Bell did not seem too happy to Hornibrook in the next over, but got a single off his seventh, and M’Mullan added another off the last, bringing up 40. M’Mullan out Liddicutt for a single, and then Bell stopped one and kicked it on to his own wicket in recovering.—3—4—42. Higgins followed, and got a single off the last one of the over. Hornibrook then sent down to him the first maiden of the match. M’Mullan drove Liddicutt’s first for 2, and put up his third dangerously for a single. Liddicutt’s sixth, fast and low, beat and clean bowled Higgins.—4 —1—46. Carlton, the skipper, stepped into the breach. M’Mullan cut tho first of. Hornibrook’s next over for a single. Then Carlton missed completely one he tried to turn to leg and was clean bowled. —50 —47, followed. Asher, a lefthander* with a jerky action, suggestive of a throw, took up the bowling from Liddicutt. and sent down a maiden to M’Mullan. Pellew came on at tho pavilion end, and Galland cut his fourth for a single. The next went for a leg bye, the first extra of tho game. The rest of tho over produced nothing. M’Mullan opened out to Asher and drove him crisply, but it was fielded for 1. Fifty up, as a result of 63 minutes’ play. Galland, after badly missing one, cut Asher for 2. Fellow’s first to M’Mullan produced a single, but the rest of the over was uneventful. Asher sent down a no-ball in his next over, and then M’Mullan cut him for a single. The scoring continued to be very slow, and the monotonous succession of singles was rarely broken. M’Mullan gave Galland the last ball of Pellew’s over by scoring 1. and then he added another off the first of Asher’s next over. Galland vatied things a little with a carpet drive for 2, but a couple of balls Inter he touched one into the safe hands of Eichardson behind the wickets.—6—s—s9. Westbrook came in, and a single to M’Mullan to leg off Pellew brought 60 on the board. Westbrook opened his score by cutting the next for a single. A powerful drive of M’Mullan’s was fielded for 1. This made M’Mullan’s own score 20. Something likr; a disc': .went up when M’Mullan off-drove Asher to the boundary, but the end was near. Three balls later he pulled one hard and clean to square leg, but it went straight at Liddicutt, who made no error with a difficult catch.—7—24 —66. Cecil Alloo was the incomer, and Dr Bogle took up the bowling from the pavilion end Westbrook added a single, and another catno for a leg bye. Then Westbrook swept the doctor In log for 4. and brought 70 up. Yet another change was made in the bowling, and Waddy came on at the far end. Alloo opened his score by. pulling a full toss of Waddy’s to square leg, the ball going through a gate out of the ground. Eighty came up when Alloo got Bogle almost to the square log boundary for 3. Alloo lifted Waddy not too safely for a couple, and sacrificed a run a little later by going back after he had started. Westbrook cut Bogle’s first ball into liornihrook’s hands at s’ip. g —s 32. Torrance, who followed, got a nice square cut to the boundary, but cut Bogle’s next ball into Ilornibrook’s hands again. 9 —4—85. Tho last man. Casey, brought SO up with a good leg boundary ptvrke off Hondo. Waddy s rn-xt; over produced only a single. Alloo off-drove Bogle to the boundary, and then added another 4 to leg. A single to Alloo brought the century up. Cnsey added a single to point off Bogle. A lc" bye off the Inst ball gave Waddy’s bowling to Alloo. He found n vacancy in the field to leu for 2. and then he and Casey each hit a single. Cosoy got a closely run single off Bogle’s next over, and brought 110 up by hitting Waddy to the on boundary. In the same over he repeated performance off Girec successive balls, bringing 120 up. Each batsman added « single off the over, which hid produced 18. Asher came on at tho pavilion end. and Alhio drm-e him for a single. Alloo went for n big hit off his fifth ball and jm smartly stumped, the

final figures reading 10 —25—127. The innings closed, and the tea adjournment was taken at 10 minutes past 4. The last wicket stand had been easily the most fruitful of the day, adding 41 runs. At 4.30 the visitors started their innings, and A. Alloo took up the bowling to Richardson, who had Asher for a partner. Both batsmen got smart singles off short strokes, and then Richardson drove AToo for 2 and pulled him to the leg boundary for 4. Carlton went on bowling at the pavijion end, and Asher brought 10 up by turning him to leg for a couple. The over was otherwise unproductive. Torrance fielded a big hit of Richardson’s well on tho boundary, and 2 were run. Two were added for byes, and then Richardson stole a, single. In the next over Richardson lifted one towards A. Alloo at mid-off, who ran in, and delighted the crowd by bringing off a good catch. I—lo—ls.1 —10 —15. Lampard was the incomer, and made a single off his first ball. In tho next over Asher hit Alloo almost to the off boundary for a brace, and added another 2 with a leg stroke. Twenty up. Lampard' got Carlton prettily to square leg for 2, and then to fine leg for 3. Asher added a single. In the next over he cut Alloo for I, but this was all the over produced. The batsmen each scored singles off Carlton, and 30 went on the board after 25 minutes’ play. Casey took up tho bowling at tho far end from Alloo, and Lampard turned his first to leg for 4. In the next over Asher and Lampard each added a single off Carlton. Two more singles followed off Casey, and then Lampard got him to the leg boundary, bringing 40 up. Lampard. made "a weak, uppish stroke, but it fell clear of M’Mullan’s reach. Torrance came on bowling at the pavilion end, and his second clean bowled Asher. 2 —12—42. Liddicutt was next, and got a nasty knock from his first ball. Tho second he played on to his wicket, to the immense delight of the crowd. 3—0—42. Dr Bogle followed to the wickets, and played out Torrance’s over, which was a maiden, with two wickets. Casey’s fourth in the next over Lampard cut for 1, and two more singles followed. Torrance was being treated with respect, and his next over produced only 1 to Lampard. Lampard lifted Casev over mid-on for a couple and drove him for 1. A single to Lampard off Torrance put 50 on the board after the innings bad been in progress for 55 minutes. Bogle ran 1 for a short stroke, and added another off Casey’s first Lampard cut him for 2 just out of Westbrook’s reach, and got another couple to leg. The last of the over Lampard cut over Torrance's head to tho . boundary—6o up. Torrance continued at the pavilion end, and Bogle hit him to leg for a single. Each batsman added another, the over producing 3. A. Alloo came on again in place of Casey, and all the result of the oven: was a single to Bogle. The same batsman cut Torranoo almost to the fence for 2, and then hit him to the square-leg boundary—--70 up. The next ball produced a single from the same direction, and off the last Lampard hit another 1. By this time the light was failing, and the spectators were fading away. Four singles wore added off Alloo’s next over. Carlton came on again ,at the end. Bogle cut him for 1, and then a bye brought 'BO up. Lampard brought hts own score to 40 by hitting Alloo to the on for a single. In the last over of tho day sent down by Carlton the only score was a single to Lampard. When stumps were drawn at five minutes to 6 the Australians had compiled 82 for the loss of three wickets in 82 minutes’- play. The following are the details: — Otago. First Innings. A. W.
