CHARGE OF BOOKMAKING

A HEAVY! PENALTY. (P*m United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 18. James Paterson, recently charged with carrying on the business of a bookmaker, and in whose case two juries at the Supreme Court disagreed, was charged, at the Magistrate's Co’urt to-day with using the Star Private Hotel as a common gaming house and trespassing on the Hutt Park Racecourse on January 23 last, he being a prohibited person under the Gaming Act. In fining Paterson £IOO, with costs, on the first charge, and £2, with costs, on the second, the magistrate (Mr Hunt) said: “He has had two starts and two wins, and he cannot complain this time.” The magistrate added that the facts adduced did not convince the jury, but had convinced him. This was the last fine he was going to impose on bookmakers.
