Friday, March 18. (Before Messrs J. P. Scott and H, E. Holler, J.’s P.) Drunkenness. —Thomas Hastings was fined 10s, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. , Motor By-laws.—William Henry Perkins was fined 10s, with costs (7s), for riding an unregistered motor cycle.—Defendant said) his first cycle was registered, and he notified the police that he had sold it and intended to get another. He thought this was oil he had to do. Alex. Patrick was similarly dealt with for driving an unlighted motor vehicle in Princes street after dark. Adjourned Charges.—Ernest Hellycr was charged with selling milk below the standard. —Mr F. B. Adams, Acting Crown Prosecutor, said he appeared for the Public Health Department in the matter, and had arranged with defendant for an adjournment to April 15.—Adjourned accordingly. Charges against Steve Wiley and Mark Thomas M’Keay, of being found on licensed premises after hours, were adjourned until Monday next. . Riding Free on Railways.—o. E. Shirley, who did not appear, was charged with travelling from Port Chalmers to Dunedin without paying his fare. —Evidence was given by tho guard that he gave defendant several chances to find his fare; that, defendant said he had a mate who would! pay it for him; and that, when asked for his name and address, he Said he was staying at the Wharf Hotel. Tho amount of the fare was lid, with a fin© of 6d. The’ guard added that defendant promised to come back and pay bis fare, but did not do so.—Constable M'Culloch said he found defendant in a boardinghouse at Kaikorai. Defendant said/he bought a return ticket to Port Chalmers, but could not find the faro coming back to Dunedin. Defendant also said that he did not tell the guard that ho was living at the Wharf Hotel, but that he had a friend there.—Defendant was fined 10s, with costs (9s), and witness’s expenses (10s). Playing Two-up.—George William Sooones, Bertie Wilfred Barclay, and William Halligan pleaded guilty to playing "two-up” in Lower High street on Christmas Eve.—Chief Detective x Bishop said) Sergeant Shanahan, who was on duty about 1.15 a.m., watched a group playing for about 15 minutes, and saw money change hands. When ho obtained assistance and went up to the group, all of them ran away except these three. Apparently they had just come along and joined the group.—Mr Irwin, who appeared for defendants, said they, had) been quite frank about , the matter, although at that time of the night there might have been some difficulty in obtaining evidence against them. Defendants had been out for the evening, and seeing the group playing joined in. Apparently they thought they were not doing anything very wrong.—Defendants were each fined 10s, and ordered) to pay costs (11s) between them,—Mr Irwin suggested that it was a case in which the press might be recommended not to publish tho names, but Mr Scott said if was a matter which they would leave to the press without making any recommendation.
