AUSTRALIA v. MANAWATU. i VISITORS’ FINE DISPLAY. v- (Feb United Fbisb Asscjpiation.) PALMERSTON NORTH, February 15. Great interest was displayed in the big cricket match at the Sports Grounds between the visiting Australians and the •Manawatu eleven. The weather was glorious, and there was an attendance of well over-1000. Manawatu batted first, and contrary to general expectations, made a very determined stand. They were dismissed for 172 runs. Their batting was not strong, but their display of fielding later in the day • eclipsed that of the Australians. The local bowlers, Greer and Harrison, shaped well at the start of their attack, but towards the end of the day their performance fell very fiat-. The Australians gave a very fine display of batting. They do not linger at the wickets, but hit out at anything at all ; ‘likely to produce results. Their bowling and fielding was a pleasure to watch, and very little got past them. They have lost five wickets for 196 runs, and the visitors’ recognised best batsmen have yet to play. These are Hansford, Dr Bogle, Richardson, Kijppax, and Liddicut, the last two named . being still in. Scores: — MANAWATU. First Innings. A. M. Ongley, o Liddicut, b Asher 6 A. Hose, run out 46 K. Poverty, Bay’s second innings realised 56. Drake, who' made 18, was the only double-figure scorer. The challengers, having to make 108 to win, scored that total for the loss of eight wickets (Dacre 61, Collins 22}, thus winning the Hawke Cup, which for two' years had been held by Poverty Bay. ' OTAGO v. CANTERBURY. ; The representative match which will be played at Carisbrook on Friday, Saturday, and Monday is causing a good deal of in- . tercet in cricket circles. The Canterbury i Association is sending down a good side, which is expected to give a good account of itself. The leading batsmen have been making, a lot of runs in club cricket of late, and some first class batting should be Witnessed. The Otago Eleven is considered to be the best ft is possible to put in the field,' and it will doubtless do well. With the. fine weather experienced since Christmas Otago batsmen have had an opportunity Of striking form, and they are ex- ■ pected to put up a good score. The match will commence at 2 p.m. on Friday, and at 11 a_m. on Saturday. THE CANTERBURY TEAM. The following team has been selected to represent Canterbury against Otago (in Dunedin)' and Southland (in Invercargill):— R. C. Blunt. L. R. Brunton, O. E. Evans, N. Jones, M. L. Page, W. R. Patrick, R. Read, D.‘W. Reese, D. M‘K. Sandman. H. Watson, and R. D. Worker. WELLINGTON PLAYERS IMPRESS VISITORS. (Fbom Oub Own Corbesfondent.) WELLINGTON, February 15. i The Australian cricketers were rather impressed with the play of some members of the Wellington team in the recent match , here, but specially were they impressed with Hiddlestone’s batting. The opinion was even expressed that if he had practice ; among the better players to be met in Australian cricket he would find his way into a test team. They did not expect to find ■! a man here who would knock up 14 runs off'the first over in such a match. Hiddlestone is certainly a delightful batsman to watch, his strokes being so clean, forcible, • and well-timed. , The manager of the team urges local cricketers to get hold of promis- . ing players from the schools, and take them , into the city teams as is done in Australia. , Kippax, Frosborg, Pellew, and Hornibrook are young men who are likely to be heard ■I of in the best teams that Australia is likely . to produce in the near future.
