HEAVY CRIMINAL CASES.

AFTERMATH OF WAR.

WELLINGTON, February 1. In his charge to the grand jury at the opening of the criminal sessions, Mr Justice Chapman said the cases for trial were numerous, and some were of considerable gravity. This was one of the consequences of the general unrest existent in almost all countries involved in the great war. All they could do was to co-operate in vigilance. This <}uty fell on, citizens. not merely on the police, who could not bo everywhere.

TIMARU SESSION. TIMARU, February 1. The Supreme Court opened to-day before Mr Justice' Herdman. There was only jOiie case on the criminal calendar—a prisoner for sentence. This was Archibald Campbell M'Kellar, fdr breaking and entering at Happy Valley. As prisoner’s record was a bad one, he was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
