TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Taieri County Council was held on Friday, wihen there was a full attendance of councillors, Cr Walter Blaokie presiding. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the past' eight weeks had amounted to £3714- Os 2d, and tho expenditure for December and January had totalled £2979 6s 6d. The bank book showed a debit balance of £5962 5s 4d. —Adopted. The Sanitary Inspector reported that all tho slaughterhouses in the county and the piggeries at Green Island were in a clean condition. He also stated that the Silverstream was in a very dirty state owing to various causes, the flow ox water was very low, and in some parts it was entirely dry. Received.

Tho Ranger reported having impounded 56 head of cattle and 7 horses. At a sitting of tihe Magistrate’s Court tm December 10 he had five cases of persons riding cycles without lights, when fines ranging from 5s to 30s, with, costs, had been inflicted. H» also had a case of allowing horses to wander at night, and a fine of £l, and costs, had been imposed.—Received. CORRESPONDENCE. The Public Works Department, Wellington, advised that the Minister of Ihiblio Works was prepared to recommend that Townley’s road be unconditionally exempted from, the provisions of section 117 of “ The Public Wci-ks Act, 1908,” but the exemption of the Kaikorai Valley road, os applied for, could not be. granted, as this road was a main road into tho City of Dunedin.— Received and noted. The Mines Department, Wellington, wrote asking for the consent of. the council to tho sum of £3O, rent owing by the Deep Stream Gold Mining Company (Limited), being treated as irrecoverable in terms of section 402 of “The Mining Act, 1908.” The request was granted. The New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers asked that tho council afford an opportunity to the engineer to attend the annual general meeting of the society, which will be held at. the end of February.—Granted. The Noxious Weeds Inspector drew attention to Jhe necessity of dealing gorse, broom, sweetbriar, and ; Californian Thistle. The same officer also stated that rabbits on Taieri River bank, abutting on roadline below Otokia township, -in block IV, Otokia Survey District, should be destroyed.—To be attended to. '

John Thomson (Mosgiel) asked permissibn to make a crossing to his property in Gladstone road.—Granted on the usual candh tiona.

Arthur Grant (Gladfield) asked that a culvert at the entrance to one of his fields bo attended to. —Granted.

W. Park (Wylie’s Crossing) asked permission to put in a two-inch pip© across Glad-field-Owhiro road, to lead water into a trough.—Granted on th© usual conditions. W. B. Gibb, Fairfield, drew attention to a faulty drain near to Fairfield School—Received. • J. and D. Peat drew the council’s attention to tho hollow and worn-out state of the Dry ridge road, leading through the Taieri County properties.—No funds are available.

Some letters we/e received from residents in connection with the road leading to run 596, Glodbrook settlement, requesting that it be brought through the “rock paddock" instead of where it was situated at present. —The matter was held over till the next meeting.

John Fry, Brighton, drew attention to the condition of tile road in front of his house. —This being a private entrance, the council offered no objection to the writer attending to the matter. W. Duke and Sons, Ltd-, directed attention to a culvert across the Kaikorai Valley road, which in wet weather discharged on to their paddock.—The matter wda referred to th© engineer and the member for the riding.

S. EoLLmson, What© Flat, wrote with regard to tho state of the road between the schoolhouee and Kay's bridge.—The Engineer reported having replied that attention would be given to any. surfacing required, but the finance of the riding would not permit of anything further than this being done at (present.—The engineer's action approved. GENERAL. In connection with the work on the Sutton to Matarae road, it was decided to debit the cost of same in equal proportions to Strath-Taieri and Deep Stream Ridings. The Engineer reported that at would cost £6O to give a light coating of metal to the road mentioned by Mr Callaghan (Green Island), in tho Kaikorai Riding.— The matter was held over till the next meeting.

The dog tax was fixed at the same rate as former charges. Thursday was agreed on as the day of the week for the statutory half-holiday. Dr MKibbin, district health officer, waited on the council and explained the operations of the new Public Health Act, so far as it affected the council. He explained that the services of the department’s sanitary inspector would be at the disposal of the council, and there would be an increase on '-he present levy on the council of £23 per annum.—Or Scott moved that the proposal, as outlined by Dr M‘Kibbin, be agreed to. —Seconded by Cr Kempahell and carried.

The tender of James MTSimon (£2l) was accepted for the delivery of 120 tons of metal at the top end of the road at Pryde’s, Kaikorai Riding.
