CITY COUNCIL REPORTS

The following are some of the main olauses of the various committee reports to be presented at the meeting of the City Council on' Wednesday night:— The Electric Power and Lighting Committee reports that authority has been granted to purchase a small freezing plant for .iaipori at a co3t of £75, and to erect a suitable building and instal the plant therein for the further sum of £100. The plant will be used for keeping the employees' meat and foodstuffs fresh during the summer months. As the coal miners', strike in Great Britain will almost certainly cause further delay in the completion and delivery of the synchronous condenser for Halhvay Bush, it hrus been found necesary to extend the' restrictions at present imposed on applications for power supply over 3 lj.p. to cover all applications for power. The tenders for the plant required for the Milton extensions have been received, and are being reported on by the city electrical engineer. If possible the report and recommendations will be submitted to this meeting of council by the chairman. The Public Works Committee will recommend that an offer be accepted for tho purchase of a strip of land for the widening of Maryhill terrace, the amount of compensation involved being £100.—The committee will further recommend that a plan to be laid on the table showing the proposed lay-out. of the new town yard in Hanover street be approved, and authority granted to proceed with the erection oi that portion of the buildings required for the works and water departments and the Drainage Board, at an estimated cost of £3741. Tho main store for the threo departments will be centrally situated as shown on the plan, and will be all under one roof. Shelter for plant and workshops is provided for under separate roofing. The walls will sll bo of brick, arid the roofing malthoid. Tho scheme allows for future extensions to the accommodation as may be required f-om time to time. It is further that the work be carried out by day labour. —Tho committee will also report that authority be granted for tho purchase of one G.M.C. motor truck of 1 ? tons carrying capacity for the sum of £850. This type of. truck is being purchased in placo of two Ford trades for which provision was made in the allocations.

The Reserves Committee recommends that an offer from the George Street School Committee to oontribute the sum, of £100 towards the cost of constructing a swimmingpool and shelter shed iu the Woodhaugh. Gardens, on condition that the City Council contributes a like amount, be accepted, and that authority be granted to proceed with the -work.—The committee further reports that 10 applications for 15 wicket pitches on the recreation reserves during the present season have been granted on tlio usual condition—viz., payment by the applicant of £3 for each wicket l applied for. The Finance Committee reports that the corporation has in hand fixed deposits amounting to £227,119 10s.

The Works Committee of the Drainage Board reports that authority has been granted for the laying of 165 ft of 12in pipo and the construction of throe tanks with man-hole and connection in Grendon street, for carrying away storm water which at present collects in the new portion of the street and floods neighbouring properties. The estimated cost of the work is £175 15s.
