SALARIES OF TEACHERS
PAYMENT OP INCREASES.

An mrpnry touching the date when the paymont of increased salaries to school ■teachers could be expected was made in the House of Representatives tliis afternoon by Mr W. IL Field (Otaki), who quoted a letter from one of his constituents as illustrative of the anxiety that was felt on the point The writer remarked that it had been stated by the Minister that tlio payments would be mndo before the end of this month and a later announcemetf; had indicated that it would not bo until next month that the increase would bo available. The teachers needed the money, and it was not much comfort to tliem to state that, the payments would be retrospective. Only that morning he had spent some time with the representatives of the Educational In Etitutc, and placed before them a rough draft of tho proposals. The institute had asked for a few days to consider the proposals, with a view to making suggestions and ho had agreed to the request. is soon as thoir expressions of opinion were forthcoming no time would bo lost in distributmg the money to the teachers
