THE UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.

TO THE EDITOR.

Sra,—Dr Moore, in a letter in t.ln'g morning's issue of your paper, complains that tho democratic idea behind tho University Aots is a dead letter. Surely, Sir, it is time that it was recognised that democracv is society run mad, and that it is absurd to recommend the application of democratic! principles to the election of members of tho University Council. These men give much of thoir time, and in many cases of their money, to tho university, and should be allowed to give their attention to its affairs without being disturbed by foolish criticism.— I am, etc., Faih Plat. August 4. Sir.—Concerning tho letter headed "Tho University Council" which appears in your issuo to-day, I should like to ask one question. Can tho writer of that letter explain how a University Council consisting of two clergymen, thxeo doctors, throe schoolmasters, a professor, two lawyors, and five business men should display these faults which might be expected "when a number of keen, fbusiastio self-sacrificing business men aro placed in chrugo of a scholastic institution?" —I am, etc., Business Man August 4.
