NOTES BY SENTINEL. iCHRISTCHURCH, April 5. The Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting was opened in splendid weather, and there was an excellent attendance. The track was in good order, and the co/rd provided some very interesting eport. Arrowsmith scored a meritorious win in the Great Eae*er. The field was well in the straight when he came through a eomawbat lucky opening on tho rails, and, vigorously handled, got up in time to win by a head. Brackenfield was unlucky, as his rider lost a leather at the turn, and had to handle his mount at a disadvantage at tho critical stage of the race. Sasanoff was started only in tho Sockburn, at tho urgent request of his rider, who was anxious that he should have a gallop in the Gretu Autumn, for which he will start a strong fancy. He won neatly, and without being seriously called upon to win. The Champagne Stakes was a good race, but the result come as a shock, as Winter Wind failed just when he was expected to shine—namely, as a stayer. Right and Left finished very resolutely, and has improved a good deal since last Wellington Cup meeting. There was a good deal of delay in balancing the investments with the totalisator, with the result that the latter part' of the card was running half an hour behind time. The Kildiaro Hurdle field was reduced to a quintet by the withdrawal of Gaylight. Kohu was eem out ia strong favourite, carrying twice the amount that was 'on the second choice. Kilboyne led the way, and had a life at the 1 second hurdle. After turning in to the back the leader was joined by Bombproof, with the others lying handy. Kilboyne dropped out over half a mile from home, and Kohu led Bombproof and Hylans to the last, jump, at which Bombproof swerved and interfered with Hylans, and Prince Delaware unshipped his rider in the run liomc. Kohu, with nothing much to spare, beat Hylans by nearly two lengths. Bombproof was about six lengths away, third, and Kilboyne a long way b*ok. Moorfowl was withdrawn from, the Champagne Stakes, tho stable being content to rely on Winter Wind, who was baoked to a very short odds-on chance. The favourite drew the outßide berth at the barrier, but Fabrinade led tho favourite into the straight. Winter' Wind looked a winner at the cuV tance, but was then challenged by Right and Left on the rails, and Delight on the outside. The favourite collapsed at the halfdistance, and in a good finish Right and Loft beat Delight by over a length, whilst Winter Wind, who was not ridden right out, finished! two lengths away, just beating: Chrysosfcom, who finished well, Tho winner put up a time record for the Tace. Fabrinade showed ft good turn of speed for about four furlongs and a-half. Taunaha was made a good favourite) for the Autumn Plate, and good support also came for Nightraider and Clean Sweep. When tie field settled down Flight Commander took charge, and with Link Up led the way into the straight, with Nightraider, Admiral Talbot, Some Kid, Taunaha, Kilgour, and Clean Sweep close up; whilst Starland, who had ' been twice disappointed in an effort to get through, was in the ruck. Nightraider and Clean Sweep were momentarily in front when

they headed Flight Commandler at the distance. A little later Tttanaha took charge, and going on won by two lengths from K:l----gour, who bent the fast-finishing Starland by the narrowest of margins. Some Ed, Nightraidor, and Clean Sweep were dose up to the placed' Jot. With a better run Starland must have seriously troubled the favourite. Hetaua was the only withdrawal from the! Great Easter Handicap, which proved an excellent betting race. They made Onslaught favourite, with Arrowsmith, Chimera, and Radial all well backed.. They got away worn a good line, from which Chimera and Radial were first to appear. Radial, on the rail, however, got shut . out, and Miohaela was slow on her legs, .and ran along the back at the tail of the field. Brockenfield and Si-nart led into the straight, and at the distance the former had- drawn into a good lead, whilst Arrowsmith, on the rails. Chimera, Fiery Cross, and Radial'were olose up. Inside the distance Arrowsmith came with a good run, and catching Brackenfield a few strides from the post, won by a head. Chimera was over a length away, Fiery Cross, Radial, and Sunart following in olose order. Horsemanship' played a prominent part in the decision, as Gray, after getting out of trouble, -won at the right place; whilst too much use was made of Brackenfield and Sunart, who hung a bit at the rise of the barrier, but Michaela got the worst of the breakaway. Radial had not quite sufficient speed to hold his place over the first couple ■of [ t furlongs, and, in consequence, got badly placed oh the rails. He did fairly well, with 41h over, to finish so close to the placed lot. Fiery Cross ran a good race, and' so did Chimera; but as the race was run Brackenfield was unlucky, as his rider came back minus a stirrup leather, and his most formidable opponent had to make good" arfter getting into trouble. Brackenfield was well clear at the distance, andi looked all over a winner. It was a great performance for the, winner to put up am Australasian xpeord under the oir'cumstances. There is 'no doubt "now* about-'• ArrWwsniith being able to stay, as he finished l very strongly, with the assistance, of course, of a first-class horseman. Tribulet, Little River, and Bebehead were first into the straight in the Russley Plate, and in the run home Little River wotf bj a length and a-half from Tribulet, with Bebehead olose up, third, and Jazz next. Fabroult broke a' leg when racing past the distance post. Sasanoff had a comfortable win in the Sockbura Handicap, and.put.. wfr a good performance under bis weight. Satisfaction led the G-imcraok field into the straight, bat when well inside the distance Cashmere and Adopted challenged, aiid in a good finish Cashmere beat Adopted by a neck. Satisfaction woo half a length away, third, and Orange Bitters next. Plastic k>3t his rider after .passing the post. Tyne and Hetaua led out- in the Courtenay Welter, whilst Sisyphus got badly away. They Tan in close order into the straight, an! at <he distance All Ready book charge, and in a great finish beat Melee by a head. Old Gold was half a, length off, and Sisyphus next. Melee ran a great race under his load of 10.11, but some watches mads the race 12 l-ssec slower than the official time. AUCKLAND RACES. {Pbb Usiteii puess Association.) AUCKLAND, April 5.
