ENGINEER'S REPORT. The engineer (Mr J. M'G. Willrio) reports as follows for tho month ending March 17:— Dredging.—Daring the month of February Dredge 222 had lifted five loads, or 4165 cubio yards, of spoil from the Victoria Channel in the vicinity of piles 31 and 52, and 16 loads, or 13,333 cubio yards, from Rattray street wharf, malting a total of 21 loans, or 17,493 cubio yards, far tho month. The dredgings froni, the bottom of the out at Rattray struct wharf contained much stone, and two loads of this material were taken to sea. in order to avoid probable injury to the Vulcan's runner. The remainder of the spoil (13.328 cubio yards) was deposited at the Vulcan. On February 9 the 'dredge took the ground whilo turning in the channel off Ravensbourne, but sustained no damage. Tho dredge steamed 130 miles and burned 159 tons of coal. . The coal supply is still un- ! satisfactory, and a largo percentage of the coal being used is lignite. During the month of February the Vulcan pumped into Lake Logan cubic yards of fhatedal received from Dredge 222. The dredgings from Rattray street wharf being full of timber, iroa, etc., considerable delays occurred in renioving blockages in the runner. Advantage was taken of the two trips of Dredge 222 to tho Heads to overhaul «md repair punts, pipes, and ball joints. Docks.—During the month of February two -vessels were docked in the Otago Dock and four in the Port Chalmers Dock. Various Works. —For a period of four weelis ended March 10, 650 cubio yards of stone were punted from the Kaik Quarry. Arrangements .are now being made to transport some large blocks of stone from the qt;arry for the protection of tho root of the mole wall. Mole Lights: The two Aga flashing lights have been installed in toe leading beacons, and are now being adjvsted before being gazetted. Hayward Point Light: The work is nearing cojnj>letion, and it is hoped to have the light in operation by the end of tho month. ■Rattray Street Wharf " Widening.—The berth alongside this wharf has been dredged to 28ft at "low water, and the new piles are now being prepared for driving.
