WEST HARBOUR COUNCIL
The Borough Council of West Harbour held its monthly meeting last night, when there woro present the Mayor (Mr H. E. Moller), Crs Barker, Smith, Frasar, Hanidge, Mitchell, Goocb, M'Ewm, Robertson, and Robb. -A letter was received from Mr W*. W. Bagley: (St. Leonards) complaining of a : bad Bmell emanating from a section near hia property.—The inspector was instructed to inquire into the matter complained of. The Town Clerk, Dunedin,' wrote drawing the attention of the council to the necessity of conserving the water supply, end asking it to impress upon local residents the importance of avoiding waste. —Rtceivcd, In connection with tlie matter of the new roads in the/township of Rosenoath, the council ,passed a resolution exempting Clyde street and portion of District road from the provisions of the Public Works Act. It was also resolved, on the recommendation of the Minister of Public Works, to frame a by-law forbidding the creotion of any building within 33ft of the centre of /these roads on either side of them.
The Works Committee's report' was adopted, and the recommendations for, improvements contained therein were approved. Tbie report of the Finance Committee was adopted, and accounts amounting to £144 10s 5d were passed for payment. The recommendation of the committee that a. ranger's salary of £25 per annum bo added to the salaiy of the town clerk as from February 1 met with the unanimous support, of the council.
The District Engineer, Public Works department, wrote stating that 1150 cubic yards of metal would be required to put the West Harbour roads in good order, at an estimated cost of £575. He strongly urgd that the work be carried out, and if the council was prepared to find half the oost he would be pleased to recommend that the Government grant a £ for £ subsidy.—lt was resolved to aek .the department to proceed with the expenditure of the present giant of £200., the council offering to supply the labour, as funds did not permit of the council falling in! with the Scheme as proposed by the District Engineer. In connection with the forthcoming visit of the Prince of Wales to Dunedin, the City Council asked the borough to contribute £19 as their pro rata .share of the oost of the entertainment of the royal visitor.—The council agreed to pay' the amount, the Mayor remarking that his Royal Highness would' make a stop at' Ravensbourne on his way to Port Chalmers for the purpose of receiving an address from the residents of the district.
