BOXING TOURNAMENT

The boxing tournament under the auspices of the Otago Boxing Association was continued at His Majesty's Theatre last night, when some.' interesting bouts were witnessed. The following are tho results: —• LIGHT-WEIGHTS. H. Leckie. 8.0 (Dunedin), beat Rambridge 9.1 (H.M.S. New Zealand). Tho men fought two torrid rounds, and Rambridgo, in a sportsmanlike manier, declined to go on with tho third round. Leckie stood up to his heavier opponent in tho gamost manner possible, and scored ropoatedly with a straight left. His footwork and timing were excellent. Rambridgo also used an effective left and a. fine right swing. At the end of the second round Leckie had certainly had nothing the worst of the exchanges, and as a matter of fact, he was leading on points. hut Eambridge's weight and strength were beginning to tell. At the con. elusion of the contest both men were heartily cheered. Mitchell, 9.0 (Dunedin). beat Coulson 9 3 (H.M.S. New Zealand). Both men exchanged a lot of heavy punches, but not much science was displayed-, and there was too much roughing and clinching. Naylon. 10.6 (Invorcargill), boat S. Mackey. Naylon outboxed his opponent who did not see out the first round ' Mitchell beat Owens (H.M.S. New Zealand). Ihis contest went tho full three rounds. Owens, who is quite a lad, has a nice style, arid shows promise of developing into a very clever boxer. Ho repeatedly propped off his stronger opponent with a straight left to the foee. Mitchell's Tushin" tactics are not attractive, and he suffered by contrast with the style of Owens. Tho scoring must have been close. WELTER-WEIG HTS. H Withoy, 11.0, drew with D. Battle, 9 6 (H.M.S. New Zealand). This contest was fought in three two-minute rounds. It was a rather unequal contest as .regards weight and size, and tho referee's verdict of a draw met with general approval. SPECIAL SIX-ROUND BOUT. A. Goodman, 8.12, beat W. Charles, 911 (H.M.S. New Zealand). The rounds wer« each of two minutes. Charles's chief attack was a right swing to tho head. Ho also displayed clever footwork. Goodman scored freely with a straight left, the Dunedin man repeatedly getting inside his opponsct's leads. Tho scoring must have been fairly equal. HEAVY-WEIGHTS. 11. Whitakor, 12.8 (Invercargill), beat A. Smith. 12.8 (Oamaru). Tho first round saw Whitakcr scoring nicely with well-timed lefts to tho face. Both men v.-pro inclined to hold and hit in tho clinches. Several strong rallies took rlaco in the second •round, Whitaker again using an effective left, and Smith relyinrj mostly on left and right swing, with an occasional straight blow to the head. Smith camo strongly in tho last round, but could not wine off the score put up against him. Before tho last bout Admiral's Coxswain Soarle assembled his fellow sailors on the stage ivnd- thanked tho Boxing Association and the citizens for tho kindness which had been extended to them during their stay in Dunodin. The speaker said—and he "was apparently quite sincere—that ho and his mates had had a bettor time in Dunedin than in any place thev had visited durin" the tour of the New Zealand. The sailors then gave three cheers for tho peoplo of Dunedin, and these wero rcrrondrd to by the. audience giving three lieart-y cluxts for tho sailors.
