TRADES UNION CONGRESS
REPORT ON DIPJECT ACTION. REFERRED BACK TO PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE. Pr«i AoaocUtioa—Bv Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, September 9. (Received Sept. 10, at 7.40 p.m.) The Trade Union Congress debated the Parliamentary Committees' report deprecating a special conference on direct action. After Mr Brownlie had justified his letter on the subject. Mr Smillie moved to refer the report back to the committee. Mr Bunning (president) said that if the motion were carried it might bo interpreted as a vote in favour of direct action. The motion was carried bv 2,586,000 to 1,876,000. This result is'not regarded as committing the congress to direct action, but as a protest against recent attacks on Mr Smillie, and the assertion that he is not supported by the general mass of trade unionists.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
