GENERAL NEWS
The monthly meeting of directors of the United Starr-Bawkett Building Society -was held last evening. Mr E. A. Rosevear presided, and expressed great satisfaction, at the largo number of shares applied for in the No. 5 group, which, is just starting. During tho last 10 days upwards of 140 shares had been applied for, making the total to start with greater than that of any of tho other four groups run by tho society. It was decided to hold a ballot and salo in No. 2 group, a ballot and sale in No. 3 group, a ballot and sale in No. 4 group, and tho first ballot in No. 5 group—a total of £3500—at the annual meeting. Tho monthly meeting of the DunetEn Athenaeum Committee was held on Monday night. Professor J. 'Park occupied tho chair. It was reported that the income for the past eight months exceeded that for the corresponding period of tho previous year by about £142: that 65 vohimes had b?en added to tho library sinco last meeting ; that there had been a net increase of 25 in. the membership; and that the following presentations had been reeehryd: - Proeeeaings of ttho Parliament of South Australia for 1918, and Statistics of the State of Tasmania for 1917-1918. It was decided, in accordance with tho custom of previous years, to offer tickets of membership of tho institute as prizes for proficiency in English and history to tho pupils attending the Technical College, the Girls' and Boys' High Schools, ar.d tho primary schools of the city and suburbs.
