TRAMWAY EXTENSIONS.
TO THE EDITOB. Sir,—Wo shall soon bo faced with decisions in regard to tramway extensions to suburbs that are very ■badly served at present. 1 sincerely trust that the claims of the Maori Hill district will receive serious consideration from tho City Council. One cannot help being impressed with tho large crowd of people who walk up Pitt street to their homes bctwen lieriot row and Maori HilL Hero is a good chance of tho council establishing an extension that would more than pay its way. There is more than sufficient population to justify this extension. If we were to run cars to Opoho, Woodhaugh, Burnsido, Green Island, and Maori Hill, our people would not bo so hard pushed for houses. Poor tramway facilities prevent working people from going far out of town. 1 notice tho Oity Council is going to erect workers' . homos near Maori Hill. Surely it will not just Hop the houses there, and say to the workers, There you'are; just reach your homes as best you can." To my mind the service- via Kattray street and then by tl>e e ectrio car is about as out-of-date as ,the old horse cars were. In, these days of progress we should not bo expected to hang on for our lives to the straps on the cable cars, with a chance, of getting a gentle knock from the down car. Let us modernise our ideas, and striko at tho root of the trouble. Tho Maori Hill suburb must have a oar service via Pitt street, and I hope that when the City Council approaches the general question of extensions it will realise tho. claim we lull residents have on itecolfsidoration.-! am, etc., Pkogeess.
