Sir Evelyn Wallers, president of the Johannesburg Mines, in a letter to the Premier, warns him of the critical position of the gold mining industry. Nothing could now prevent a number of important mines from closing shortly. Sir K Wallers urges upon the Government consideration of the position in view of the unemployment distress that must result The Minister of Mines, interviewed, said the Government realised the gravity of the position, and was anxious to assfstT but the Government could not - undertake to keep the mines working at a loss. It was considering the appointment of a commit sion to inquire into the whole position •with special consideration of the problem of the.relation of native coloured labour to" tne mines. The Cape Copper Company's mine in Namaqual has closed, throwing idlT 3000 natives.—A. and N.Z. Cable '
