PERSONAL.
Hie Rev. R. s. Gray returned to Dnnedin from the north on Saturday night. Mr R. Wilson, managing director of the New Keep-ifc-Dark Alines (Limited], and of several other Reefton mining companies, is at present visiting Dunedin. Mr H. L. Tapley, chairfoan of the Otago Harbour Board, returned {ram Wellington on Saturday nig&t. Cr John Wilson, Mr W. D. R. M'Curdie (city engineer), Mr J. L. Salmond, and Mr B. B, Hooper, who were delegates at the Town Planning Conference in Wellington, returned to Dtmedin on Satatlay night. Mrs A. S. MDcragall, of Dunedin, has received advice that her husband, Sergeant A. S. M'Dougall (M.'M.), is returning by the Tofua after nearly three years' service. His brother, Sergeant S. F. M'Dongall, is also returning by the same boat after nearly four years' active service. Mr Philip Gibfos, the famous war correspondent, is likely to visit Australia and New Zealand before the end of the present year. Mr G-ibbs is now lecturing in' the United States.
Major A. B. Paterson ("Banjo" Paterson, the Australian poet), and Warrant Officer C. C. Macartney, the well-known cricketer, returned to Sydney a few days ago from active service.
The death is announced of Captain Alexander Simpson, aged 84, the last of the old 'whaling captains of Scotland, and the only survivor of the search party sent to the Arctic by Lady Franklin in 1856 in search of Sir John Franklin.
The Right Rev. Cecil J. Wood, D.D., late Bishop of Melanesia, has recovered his health sufficiently to travel, and will leave " Bishopscourt," Melbourne, this week for England. He has been appointed rector of Wifenesliam, Suffolk, and will act as assistant bishrp in the diocese of St. Edmonsbory and Ipswich.
