MILITARY DEFAULTERS

DEPRIVED OF CIVIL EIGHTS.

_ la pursuance of section 8 of the Expeditionary Forces Amendment Act, 1918, the Minister of Defence has caused to bo proP&red Md has now published in the G-azette the list of military defaulters and ho declares such list to bo the Military Defaulters List under that Act.

It is accordingly publicly notified that the men whose names appear on tho Military Defaulters List are subject under tho Act to the following- disqualifications and penalties-:—

1. They aro deprived of civil rights for 10 years from the 10th day of December, 1918, and aro therefore incapable— _ (a) Of being appointed to or of continuing to hold any office or employment in the service of tho Crown or of any looal or other public authority; (b) Of being elected or appointed or of continuing to hold office as a member of either House of Parliament, or as a member of any local or other public authority; (o) Of being enrolled as am olector or of voting- at an election of members of either House of Parliament or of mem-

bers of any local or other public authority,

2. If any military defaulter was out of New Zealand on the 10th day of December, 1918, he is prohibited for 10 yeans from returning to New Zealand.

3. Military defaulters aro prohibited for 10 years from changing their names—that is to say, from assuming or using or continuing to assume or u®e any name other than Slat by which they axe described in the Military Defaulters List. 4. Any military defaulter who commits a ■breach of any of the foregoing provisions is _ liable, on suminary conviction, to imprisonment for 12 months.

It is fur&er notified that any man whose name appears on the Military Defaulters List may, within three months after the gazetting of that list, appeal to a magistrate in manner prescribed by regulations on the ground that has nam© has been inserted in the list in error. •
